HRH The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh

It is with great sadness that The Camping and Caravanning Club learns of the loss of our Patron, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.
Prince Philip became our Patron in 1952 and had been involved with a number of the Club’s activities ever since, which included the official opening of our Club Site on the Sandringham Estate in July 1990 and hosting an event at Buckingham Palace to mark 50 years of his patronage of the Club in 2002.
Sabina Voysey, the Club’s Director General, said: “One of Prince Philip’s earliest engagements as the Queen’s Consort included a visit to the Club’s stand at the annual British Food Fair at Olympia in September 1952. It was the start of a long tradition of involvement from our Patron and one we are incredibly proud of.
“In the years that followed, Prince Philip was a supporter of the Club, camping and caravanning, and the great outdoors and in particular the many benefits these bring to young people.
“On behalf of the Club I would like to pass on our sincere condolences to Her Majesty the Queen and the Royal Family – we are deeply saddened by the loss.”
Prince Philip was instrumental in the growth and development of the Club’s Camping Club Youth (CCY) in the 1950s, and valued the importance of instilling an appreciation of the great outdoors in young people. In a hand-written telegram from 1966, signed ‘Philip Patron’, he wrote: “I was delighted to hear of your first National Camping Club Youth Rally at Uttoxeter Racecourse and send you my best wishes for a very happy and successful weekend.”
In 1957 he launched the ‘Duke’s Award’ as it was then known – a series of tests to encourage young people to develop their own aptitudes, to work with others and to develop a sense of social service.
The Sandringham Camping and Caravanning Club Site, set in the heart of the Queen’s personal Sandringham Estate, was opened by Prince Philip in the summer of 1990. He enjoyed spending time with Club members and admiring their caravans, even wearing a Club tie to mark the occasion.
In 2002 the Club was invited to Buckingham Palace to make a presentation in honour of Prince Philip’s 50 years of Patronage. The Club’s gifts included a whole series of camping kits to be used for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award charity.
