Book A Trip to the 'Late Outdoors' with the Club

Tuesday 17th October 2023

The seasons might be changing but The Camping and Caravanning Club has 18 Sites open year-round and a total of 23 sites open until the end of the year.
With prices from £8.55 per night per person, we’ve picked out three sites ideally located for winter walks and cosy stays as the temperatures drop and the nights draw in:

Boroughbridge Club Site in North Yorkshire: This campsite is ideally situated just off the A1 and is an ideal base from which to explore York and the North York Moors National Park. Pitches from £18.90 per night (2 adults)*

Wolverley Club Site, Worcestershire: Enjoy a ride on The Severn Valley Railway when you pitch up here. The Enchanted Express is a traditional steam train and can be caught from nearby Kidderminster Station. Pitches from £21.55 per night (2 adults)*

Salisbury Club Site, Wiltshire: Take a trip to the nearby Avebury Stone Circle or Stonehenge, just a short distance north of the campsite. Pitches from £20.40 per night (2 adults)*

Simon McGrath, Head of Communications at the Club, said: “Camping, caravanning and motorhoming doesn’t have to stop when the nights draw in. We have 23 Club Sites open through to Christmas and into the New Year and 18 that welcome campers year-round.

“Modern motorhomes and caravans are warm, comfy and well-equipped for year-round use – and even tent campers can still enjoy pitching up in colder weather with a little more preparation.”

To help people prepare for the autumn and winter, Iain Geddes, Senior Technical Advisor at the Club, has compiled five top tips for making the most of a winter camping break:

1. Set up camp while it’s still light: Late arrivals are popular in summer but with limited day length at this time of year it’s a good idea to pitch before the sun starts to set, when the temperatures are higher too.

2. Insulate from the ground up: The ground will be colder at this time of year so if you’re tent camping you’ll need to think about a good quality ground mat. Remember to pack a camping mattress and maybe even think about a luxury fleece carpet too.

3. Check the power: Most modern caravans and motorhomes come equipped with solar panels or as an optional extra. However, travelling in autumn and winter will mean you need to review your power options. Check your leisure battery is maintaining its optimum power level while in storage and before you head off. And why not make the most of your gas supply for caravans or motorhomes – it packs a lot of energy for its weight making it ideal for touring in colder months.

4. Complete vehicle checks: Checking over your unit is important in any weather but more so when roads risk being slippery or wet. Always check tyre tread depth and pressures before setting off and check for uneven wear or signs of bulging or cracking. Don’t forget to check oil and water levels too.

5. Keep your eyes and ears on the weather: Your camping unit might be cosy and warm but the elements might have plans to derail your trip. Keep an eye on the forecast, especially if tent camping, and if possible try to avoid travelling in high winds or heavy rain. Call the campsite ahead of arrival if you anticipate arriving later than first planned.
