Quick history of Bamburgh Castle

You’ll learn all about Bamburgh Castle's fascinating history during your visit, but here’s a short version to tempt you into finding out more.

The very first wooden stronghold on the site was erected in AD547 before falling to disrepair after the Vikings ransacked Bamburgh in AD993. The main part of the castle you can still see today was erected by the Normans in the 11th and 12th centuries. The castle was then heavily damaged by cannon fire during the War of the Roses and eventually passed to private owners. After financial turbulence and uncertainty, Bamburgh Castle was restored in 1901 and became the popular attraction it is today.
