This 14th century gatehouse once belonged to the nearby Cistercian Abbey.

Whalley Abbey's rustic ruins makes for an ideal, tranquil spot for a picnic. 

Following the dissolution of the monasteries, the abbey was largely demolished and a country house was built on the site.
