New caravanners flock to touring
Registrations of caravans are up by 20 per cent year on year, according to a survey by CRiS, the national register of touring caravan keepers.
The survey also revealed that 37 per cent of caravan registrations were from new buyers who had never owned a touring caravan before, while 23 per cent were people returning to caravanning.
The survey was sent between 1 June – when dealers reopened after coronavirus lockdown – and 3 July. It went to those who bought a caravan since March and registered it with CRiS, and drew 526 responses.
Of the new buyers, 34 per cent were aged 44 or younger, 47 per cent had children living at home, and the majority had experience of camping, caravanning or motorhoming when younger. And 20 per cent of buyers new to caravanning bought brand new caravans.
Alongside these statistics, interest in preowned caravans is particularly strong, with pre-purchase checks – a CRiS service that reveals to potential buyers if a caravan has been stolen, written off or has outstanding finance – more than 50 per cent up on the same period last year.
The Caravan Registration and Identification Scheme (CRiS) is similar to the DVLA – it provides a method of registering the caravan keeper’s details, which helps the police identify the caravan’s rightful owner and is extremely helpful for insurance purposes.
