The Club has lowered prices for holidays on its Club Sites following the UK Government’s decision to cut the rate of value added tax (VAT) from 20 per cent to 5 per cent.
The measure, announced by Chancellor Rishi Sunak in early July, was designed to get the hospitality, accommodation and tourism sector moving again after coronavirus lockdown was eased. VAT is charged on most goods and services and is normally included in the price customers see.
From 15 July to 12 January 2021, the VAT rate for the hospitality and tourism sector has been cut from 20 per cent to 5 per cent. The good news for campers is that this includes touring pitches on campsites.
Firms are not obliged to pass on the VAT cut to their customers by lowering their prices – and indeed many affected firms that have missed out on income during lockdown closures have been unable to do this – but the Club has taken the decision to apply the 5 per cent VAT rate for stays booked and taken between 15 July 2020 and 12 January 2021.
The Club’s Director General, Sabina Voysey, said: “The Government has made it clear it’s up to the individual business to decide whether this saving is passed on to customers, and while we have lost a significant amount of revenue during this period, as a membership organisation we feel it’s important that we pass this discount on to our members where we are able to.”
