How the camping sector is fighting the Coronavirus
Like many manufacturing industries, the camping sector has responded to the crisis in a number of different ways. (Current at the time of publication of the June print magazine).
Outdoor equipment manufacturers Terra Nova and Keela are in talks to find out how they can work together, looking at which fabrics can be used for personal protective equipment (PPE) and how employees can be involved in production.
Terra Nova has also created an infuriatingly catchy song to sing along to while camping at home. Check it out on YouTube.
Troll UK is also in talks with Keela about helping out with PPE projects – the company is currently making gowns for Harrogate Hospital.
Stormsure, maker of products used for repairing tents and outdoor equipment, has been producing face shield kits for use in hospitals.
Nikwax, which provides products for renewing the waterproof performance of outdoor clothing, has been working on a project with hospitals to extend the life of PPE products.
Diamondbrite, which makes paint and fabric protection systems, has switched half of its production capability to manufacturing new soap and sanitiser products. The products are available for sale, but Diamondbrite also donates a quantity to various NHS and MoD sites.
Pyramid Travel Products, best known for its insect repellents, has dramatically increased its production of hand gels and has been supplying direct to front line services.
Tent and accessory manufacturer Kelty has raised £1,750 for NHS Charities Together with its 'Night out for nurses' back garden camping campaign over the Easter weekend.
Swift Group had postponed its planned return to work to 1 June, and Bailey of Bristol until further notice (updated), subject to further guidance. Coachman caravans and Auto-Trail remain closed until further notice.
