Astonished by Club's Climbing Exhibition
When Andrew Wickham dropped in for a cup of coffee at Castleton Visitor Centre in July he was astonished to discover images of his father from the 1930s.
The photographs, taken by members of the Club’s Mountaineering Section, were part of the Climbing, Camping and the Club exhibition.
Andrew said of the exhibition, which we reported on in our August issue: “We were on our way back from Sheffield, where our son is at university, and decided to stop at Castleton. I’d never been there before.”
Andrew shared some more detail with us about his father, Cyril George Wickham, who died in 1991 and was also a member of the Alpine Club. He was first attracted to fell-walking and rock-climbing in the Lake District and North Wales in the early 1930s, made his first Alpine visit in 1934, and continued to climb into the 1970s.
Cyril was a chemist who graduated from Imperial College, and later became a qualified patent agent who went on to advise the government on the drafting of the Patents Act. He was appointed CBE in 1980.
“My father and brother were both keen climbers,” said Andrew, “while my mother and I were keen fell walkers. It was wonderful to see those old images.”
