Surge in hiking among young adults
A recent survey of 2,000 people has revealed that Britain’s youngsters are walking the walk as well as talking the talk, with a huge spike reported in the numbers of them walking for leisure.
The YouGov poll commissioned by outdoor footwear brand Merrell discovered that walking and hiking are becoming increasingly popular for 18 to 24-year-olds as they look to embrace outdoor lifestyles.
Key survey findings
49% of 18 to 24-year-olds walked for leisure more frequently in 2018 than in previous years
54% of young adults lace up their walking boots for leisure at least once a week
46% said walking helped improve their mental health
47% said they hiked to improve their physical fitness
27% said they went hiking as a way to socialise
39% of millennials (22-36 year olds) said they walked more for leisure in 2018 than in previous years
