A good night’s sleep can be all that stands between camping delight and camping disaster.
While some campers love to be swaddled up within the downy confines of a mummy-style sleeping bag, I like the luxury of stretching out in a square bag and the option of accommodating a partner with a double-sized bag. I used a double-sized Vango Aurora for my ten-day camping stint at the Club’s National Feast of Lanterns. The bag is 210cm long and 168cm across, accommodating my 180cm height with plenty to spare. The weather was a typical late August mix of sunshine, showers and nights just starting to get chilly. The Aurora’s double layer of synthetic insulation, sandwiched between an attractive polycotton shell and a brushed cotton flannel lining, kept cold at bay and the cheerful green-and-white plaid design looked great in my tent. A pair of matching pillowcases completed the stylish package. Shakey claims the cosy Auora for himself I liked the zip baffle, which cuts down on cold spots, and the extended head-rest area that stops your shoulders coming into contact with the groundsheet. The double bag can be separated into two singles for added flexibility or for ease of laundering. When you’re on the move, there’s a matching carry bag with compression straps. It’s not the smallest or lightest double on the market, but for me it’s worth tipping the scales in favour of comfort.
