Tribute to former Club President David Bellamy OBE
The Club was saddened to learn yesterday evening that Professor David Bellamy OBE, Camping and Caravanning Club President from 2002 until 2013, had passed away aged 86.
Over the years, many Club members and staff enjoyed meeting and working with David, who was an inspirational character thanks to his work as a scientist, conservationist and broadcaster, not to mention his larger than life personality.
Many Club members will have fond memories of David, whether that was through his role at the Club or as a household name thanks to his many appearances over the years on TV.
He was a regular at the Club’s National Feast of Lanterns and other events and loved meeting members, who in turn always gave him a Friendly Club welcome.
Camping and conservation go hand in hand, and David left a lasting legacy for campsites and holiday parks through the David Bellamy Conservation Awards.
The awards celebrate sites that carry out work to protect and enhance our country’s natural environment.
David was always passionate about his role at the Club and we are proud to have called him ‘Mr President’ for more than a decade.
The Club’s thoughts and best wishes are with the Bellamy family and friends at this difficult time.
