Eureka in Edinburgh
Held across two weeks, the fascinating Edinburgh Science Festival is returning to inspire, enlighten and entertain all who attend. In recognition of 50 years since the Moon landing, this year’s theme is ‘Frontiers’, and will explore the many boundaries and new horizons humanity has crossed, such as the Moon landing itself, breakthroughs in science and technology, innovations in health and environmentalism, and much more. There are hundreds of events taking place, including exhibitions, seminars, workshops, shows, performances, and debates for those of all ages. Science in the Spotlight, which explores cutting edge science through fun theatre, will also be back for kids and families to enjoy.

11-20 April
Belfast on the big screen
For film lovers out there, the Belfast Film Festival will be returning in April to take attendees on a journey through the art of cinema. In addition to screening some of today’s best pictures, films will be shown in various locations around the city that fit with the film. For example, last year they showed The Breakfast Club at the Christchurch Library. In addition to screenings, the festival will also include competitions for local and amateur filmmakers, and a number of workshops, discussion panels and master classes surrounding screenwriting and film making.

20 April
Serving up a feast
You can join in with the red and white celebrations in honour of England’s patron saint at the Feast of St George in central London this month.
Held in Trafalgar Square, the festival will host art workshops for kids, live music, stilt walkers and of course the Pearly Kings and Queens. As part of the feast, the streets of London will be filled with stalls of traditional English food.
As the feast coincides with 100 years of women’s Right to Vote, there will also be a Victorian music hall showcasing popular female British artists.

24–28 April
Take to the hills
Explore the magnificent Lower Wye Valley in Monmouthshire via the Chepstow Walking Festival. Designed to take you in and around the very best parts of the valley, the festival guides you through rolling hills and green landscapes, whilst walk leaders and valley experts explain the rich and unique plant and wildlife hidden within this environment. There are 35 different walks of varying lengths and difficulty so that everybody can have a go. Dogs are also welcome.

Plant yourself here
Experience all things beautiful at the Harrogate Flower Show, one of the most important events in the horticultural calendar. Hosted by the North of England Horticultural Society, the show brings together top garden designers, innovative landscapers, a diverse array of plant nurseries and thousands of visitors for four days of floral brilliance. Enjoy the best in green design, seasonal dishes, expert talks, and of course the outstanding plants themselves.

26 April–5 May
Unleash your inner bookworm
A week of literary fun will descend on the Northumberland town of Hexham this spring for its annual Hexham Book Festival. The event aims to enchant book lovers with a programme of workshops, author talks, cookery demonstrations, poetry recitals and seminars. A mix of both the UK’s up-and-coming and leading names, including the likes of Evan Davies, Bea Davenport and Jeremy Vine, will star at the festival. Even if books aren’t your thing, the many venues hosting the festival are a sight to see themselves, from the stunning Queen’s Hall Arts Centre, to a Victorian townhouse hotel, and even a quaint farm.

Tour de Derby
Young, old, beginners and experts will be tackling three challenging cycling routes in south Derbyshire and Staffordshire this month at the annual Cycle Derby Spring Classic Sportive. You can try your hand at the 40km, 80km, or gruelling 160km route – or even get the whole family cycling along the brand new 19km path through Markeaton Park. Sights along the various routes include Kedleston Hall, Cannock Chase, and the village of Kirk Langley. Finally, wrap up your ride at Event Village in Markeaton Park where you can treat yourself to food, drink and a much needed massage.
