Overview

Between the North York Moors National Park and the Howardian Hills, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, this peaceful campsite welcomes you to Yorkshire.

Our pretty Slingsby Club campsite sits between the rolling Howardian Hills to the south and the Vale of Pickering and the North York Moors National Park to the north making the campsite a popular base for walkers.

Situated in a peaceful location on the edge of a village, the level, well maintained campsite has modern facilities including a laundry, dish washing area and a well equipped amenity block.

There are plenty of walking opportunities direct from the campsite. Slingsby village, for example, is within walking distance and surrounded by an intricate network of lanes, footpaths and bridleways.

The area is dotted with magnificent historic buildings. Take your pick from gems including the magnificent 18th century Castle Howard, Nunnington Hall, Newburgh Abbey, Helmsley Castle and Rievaulx Abbey.

Three of the area’s most popular attractions are within 15 miles of the campsite. There’s Flamingoland with its wild animals and wilder rides, the modern history theme museum – Eden Camp and the North York Moors Railway which runs a scenic route from Pickering to Whitby.

The medieval city of York, around a half hour’s drive away, is famous for its city walls, minster and a variety of museums. The city’s Park and Ride scheme accommodates motorhomes.

Please note that all pitches on this site have electric hook-up so the appropriate additional charges apply.

Worth Noting

All pitches are Service (electric) Pitches. Mobile phone reception is poor. Site has especially hard ground so steel pegs required. A fish and chip van visits the site on Saturdays at 6.30pm.

WiFi

100% coverage cannot be guaranteed due to rural location, weather conditions and changing flora. These can cause variable signal strength. Hotspots are available. Prices.

It just goes to show how much other campsite users can affect your experience of a site as our bank holiday weekend was a visit of two halves. The first couple of nights were awful. Loud voices, don't people realise that when they are under canvas their voices can be heard? Shouty conversations at 6am don't appeal to me. Then there were the dog owners who felt that a 60 second walk to a perfectly decent dog walk was way too far for their dogs and so the rules didn't apply to them. I intensely dislike dog owners who allow their pets off the leash on site and then don't bother cleaning up the mess! Second half of the stay, as the site emptied out after the bank holiday weekend was quiet and peaceful. This is not a site for fantastic views. Its situation means there aren't any. It's a small site and it feels overcrowded. It is also in need of refurbishment and not just the toilet block, which although clean is very dated with definite signs of having seen better days, the ground lights around the camp are held together with tape and so on. Cannot fault the welcome nor the friendliness of the site wardens nor the maintenance of the flower beds etc. Enjoyed watching the swallows fledge and the evenings were filled with bats! Perfect site for getting out and about all over the North Yorks Moors. Slingsby village is lovely and the local hostelry is good too but do book in advance for meals, it's a small place. We shall return because there is so much to do in the area but with the hope that the CCC spend a little money on the site.

Stayed in a tent for 7 nights at beginning of August.

Stayed in a tent for 7 nights at beginning of August. A very friendly greeting welcomed us and although the site was almost full we were given a choice of the pitches that were left. The pitch was on a slight slope and was uneven but we coped. Plenty of room per pitch. This is a small site and there is nothing for children to do, I don't have children so it didn't bother me. We had our labradoodle with us and there is no dog walking area. There is however a lovely area to exercise the dog just across the road from the site. Toilet/shower facilities were kept spotless but could do with a little sprucing up. Only 3 showers in the female block which means queuing at busy periods. There is very little in the on site shop. There is a village shop 10 mins walk away but again supplies are limited. Nearest supermarket 6 miles away in Malton. Great area if you like walking which is mostly what we did. Particularly recommended is Castle Howard, a 3-4 mile walk there from the site and you can walk approx 5 miles around it to take in all the sights. Walk approx 2 miles across fields via public footpaths/bridleways to Hovingham. A beautiful village with a local pub and hotel to grab a bite or drink. Both dog friendly. In Slingsby itself is another dog friendly pub, The Grapes. Extremely friendly staff. If dogs aren't your thing there is seperate area to eat where dogs aren't allowed. Advisable to book weekends and evenings during peak periods as with 2 campsites in the village it gets very busy. About 40 mins from York and just under an hour from Scarborough. If I was being picky i would complain about the uneven pitch, the lack of essentials in the shop and the lack of an on site dog exercise area. However the pros outweigh the cons and I would definitely return.

Sylvia, Ron and Craig have made us so welcome and were really helpful when we had to extend our stay. The facilities are really spotless every day. I know that they have taken over this site this season, and they are really making an extra effort to get the site blooming again. We can see a difference from April when we came first.

Ideal for us. Walking close by on the moors and in the HowardIan Hills. Lots of local history and places to visit. During recent thunderstorms the managers and assistant were keen to ensure everyone was coping and safe.
