Moreton-in-Marsh is a historic focal point in the heart of the quintessentially English region, easily reached from major cities and brimming with things to do. From enjoying traditional English pubs and seeing the famous honey-coloured villages, to embarking on one of the many walking or cycling trails, you’ll find plenty of ways to enjoy this part of the UK.

Why we love Moreton-in-Marsh

There are many reasons Moreton-in-Marsh makes a brilliant base for those wanting to explore the Cotswolds. Being the main market town in the north Cotswolds, it’s got fantastic transport links. You’ll find easy rail access from Oxford and London, making it a great base if visiting via public transport. It’s also just 30 minutes from the M40 and M5.

Bourton-on-the-Water

Once pitched up and ready to explore, you’ll find so much to do in the traditional town. Moreton-in-Marsh hosts the largest open-air street market each Tuesday, which is perfect for picking up fresh produce, cheese and gifts (for yourself, as well as friends and family). The Lord of the Rings fan? Make a stop at The Bell Inn on the high street, which is said to have been J.R.R. Tolkien’s inspiration for The Prancing Pony! As you walk the high street, you’ll find independent galleries, antique shops and traditional tea rooms to fill your days. If you have time to explore further, Stow-on-the-Wold, Bourton-on-the-Water and Chipping Camden are all picture-perfect nearby towns and villages to explore.

Things to do while camping in Moreton-in-Marsh

Explore the honey-coloured high street

Moreton-in-Marsh’s High Street is lined with Cotswold stone buildings from the 17th and 18th centuries, giving reminders of the town’s long history as a centre for trade. Today you’ll find the high street full of independent boutiques, antique shops and gift shops, ideal for a slow meander at your own pace. With a choice of tea rooms, pubs and restaurants, you won’t be short of places to refuel and warm up during the winter months. You’ll find plenty of free parking along the high street however; Tuesday market days can get busy, so we recommend going early!

Visit nearby towns and villages

See more of the Cotswolds during your camping trip by visiting some of the nearby towns and villages. Stow-on-the-Wold is a short 10-minute drive from Moreton-in-Marsh and is famous for its market square and the north porch door on St Edward’s Church which is said to have inspired the Doors of Durin in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings. Bourton-on-the-Water is less than a 20-minute drive and is worth visiting for its riverside walks and picture-perfect bridges. Chipping Campden is around the same distance away and is a town known for its peaceful, unspoilt atmosphere and well-preserved thatched cottages.

Walk the Cotswolds

Walking is part of the way of life in the Cotswolds and one of the best ways to see the towns, villages and surrounding countryside. You’ll need to pack hiking boots or wellies to make the most of the walking routes and unpredictable weather. From Moreton-in-Marsh there are routes for all abilities. Either set off on-foot and explore as you please or you can follow popular routes like the Monarch’s Way and Heart of England Way which pass through the town centre. There’s an easy (1-2 hour) circular walk to take in Batsford Arboretum along the Monarch’s Way and you’ll find a lovely café midway.
