Tackling caravan weight in future

In the January magazine we looked at methods manufacturers have used to reduce the weight of their caravans. But what does the future hold for weight reduction in the industry? It’s already a growing problem for caravanning – cars are getting lighter and caravan manufacturers need to keep up if touring with a 'van is going to remain practical in the future. That said, certain inroads are already being made. Chassis maker BPW has developed a chassis that’s 35 per cent lighter than its traditional one. It’s similar in appearance to its predecessor but stronger and thinner due to the high tensile steel construction. It even uses a new torsion bar axle that removes the inconsistency of the traditional rubber axle suspension.
