Best ways to play it: Camping and Caravanning Club reveals the top ways to enjoy or avoid a summer of sport

Tuesday 2nd June 2026
Love it or loath it, the summer of sport has kicked off and whilst 31% of UK adults say they are excited for it, 67% are less enthusiastic about it.[1]
Whether you want to watch the action on a big screen or seek solace from the noise, a campsite can provide the perfect location for people, however they want to play it.
For the fans
Newquay Sports Centre is home to Cornwall’s biggest fanzone this summer, with space for 10,000 fans. There is a 28m LED screen plus bars, entertainment and a dedicated family-friendly indoor area.
Stay at Tregurrian Club Site (4 miles/15-minute drive).
Nottingham is home to the UK’s Biggest Fan Zone and is more than a venue for watching the games. Gates at Fanpark open early on match days with live music and food, with a welcoming atmosphere for families.
Stay at Nottingham Club Site and get a bus from the site into town (6 miles/20-minute drive).
BOXPARK venues at London Shoreditch, Croydon and Wembley will welcome thousands during this year’s tournament. Each features massive screens and sound systems and bring a festival experience to the games.
Stay at Chertsey Club Site (23 miles/1 hour drive). Pitches from £17.30 per pitch, per night.
Less sport, more strolls
Camping offers the best way to reconnect with nature and disconnect, with a dose of childhood nostalgia on top – more than four in ten said they spent the most time outdoors between the ages of 7 and 15[2]. Great Big Green Week (6th-14th June) is the UK’s largest celebration of community action in protecting nature and the perfect tonic to football fever. Some of the best places for nature spotting and serene escapes, perfect to explore during June and July are:
River Great Ouse
The stretch of the River Great Ouse near St Neots in Cambridgeshire is popular with canoeists, kayakers and paddleboarding enthusiasts. The area features a rich wetland habitat and is a prime spot for birds including the great crested grebes and marsh harrier.
Stay at St Neots Club Site.
Pembrokeshire puffins
Skomer Island is a world-famous puffin colony and mid-June to mid-July is the best time to see them. Ferries run from Martin’s Haven every 30 minutes and the journey takes approximately 15 minutes each way. Once on the island stick to marked paths to protect the habitats of ground nesting seabirds, including oystercatchers and manx shearwaters.
Stay at St David’s Club Site.
Super seals
Summer is a busy time for common seals around our shores. They pup in June and July and The Farne Islands are among the best places in England to see the spectacle, with boats from Seahouses Harbour.
Stay at Beadnell Bay Club Site.
Madeleine Birch, the Club’s PR and Events Manager, said: “There is an amazing summer of sport about to begin and camping can put you close to the action. “If you’re less drawn to big screens and more into fresh air and winding trails, camping encourages us to explore our surroundings and breathe deeply. Even though we’re entering a staycation summer the campsite is the perfect place to destress and unwind, which might be important depending on how things play out over the coming weeks!”
