Visiting Buckingham Palace

Buckingham Palace is undoubtedly one of London’s most iconic attractions, making it an essential visit during a day trip.

Changing of the guards ceremony at Buckingham Palace

As the residence of the British monarch, Buckingham Palace is only open for tours of the State Rooms during the summer months. There’s plenty to see from the outside year-round though. Read on for some of the highlights.

Buckingham Palace highlights

  • The palace itself is iconic, offering brilliant photo opportunities with its ornate black gates. It’s easy to happily stand back watching the crowds and taking in the ornate building for a while.
  • The Changing of the Guard is the most well-known ceremony you can watch as a member of the public from outside the gates of Buckingham Palace. Watch the guards march in their uniform as they hand over the responsibility of protecting Buckingham Palace to the new soldiers on duty. Expect music, marching, and lots of other people spectating. The ceremony takes place at 11am on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.
  • The Victoria Memorial is right at the end of The Mall, in front of Buckingham Palace and offers one of the best viewpoints for taking it all in. You can stand or sit on the memorial for the best views.
  • St James’s Park, which surrounds the palace, is perfect for a relaxed stroll. Take in the surroundings on a walk and look out for the resident pelicans, as well as other common parkland wildlife.
  • The lavish State Rooms are worth a visit during the summer months, but you’ll likely need to book your tickets in advance. Enjoy some of the most impressive royal interiors the UK has to offer during your time slot. You’ll see fascinating works of art, the Throne Room and the Ballroom where state banquets are held. You can also buy a ticket covering a tour of the gardens and the staterooms. You’ll need to allow around 3 hours in total for your visit if you’re entering the palace.
