Ron Burnett, a retiree from Juniper Green near Edinburgh, has been named as the winner of The Camping and Caravanning Club’s 125th anniversary pennon design competition.

Last autumn the Club invited its members to design a pennon to celebrate its milestone birthday. The pennon is an important emblem in Club history and there are more than 4,500 housed in the Club Archive.

The judges chose Ron’s pennon as their winning design because of its unusual composition and bold use of colour.

Ron, 77, who owns a VW Grand California and has been a Club member for over a decade, said: “I designed the pennon on my laptop – drawn myself – but I did sketch out the design in pencil first.

“The pennon incorporates the Club logo as I wanted to try and latch onto something relevant. I didn’t want the illustration to be too photo-realistic and I appreciated the linear design of Club logo, with several overlapping lines helping to create something quite contemporary looking.

“I had seen other designs in the Club magazine – which I receive through the post – and I felt they were quite historical. If you look closely at my pennon, you will see there are five bands of colour, each symbolising 25 years of Club history.”

Sabina Voysey, the Club’s Director General, said: “Ron’s pennon incorporates contemporary design elements, and I love the story behind its composition. It is a very worthy winner.”

“We will be proud to add Ron’s pennon to our collection, as we look ahead to the next 125 years of camping and caravanning.”

To pre-order a copy of the Club’s limited-edition anniversary pennon, call the Club’s Service Centre on 024 7647 5557. Pennons cost £9.41 including postage and packaging.
