Visiting Tintagel Castle

The medieval fortress of Tintagel Castle has a special place in the mythology of the British Isles particularly regarding King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. The ruins make for a brilliant family day out when staying on one of our Cornish campsites

Highlights of Tintagel Castle

Perched on the edge of a sea cliff on the rugged north Cornwall coast, Tintagel Castle is a spectacular ruin steeped in legends of kings and wizards. Here are some of the highlights and things to do while visiting:

  • To explore all the castle and ruins, you’ll need to first climb up the step-free path to the mainland courtyard. You’ll then need to cross a footbridge which connects the mainland to the island. The views from accessing the ruins alone make the trip worthwhile.
  • The outdoor display around the island and ruins helps to tell the story of the site’s history.
  • Look at the dramatic ruins of Tintagel’s early medieval settlement and picture what life would have been like for those living there.
  • Stop by the exhibition to see artefacts and learn more about the Tintagel’s past.
  • Underneath the castle is Merlin’s Cave and a small beach which can be explored when the tide is out.
  • The area is brilliant for wildlife watching, as the island is a Site of Special Scientific Interest. Keep an eye out for seals in the water and coastal birds on the island.

Parking and facilities at Tintagel Castle

You’ll find pay and display car parks in Tintagel Village. Once parked, you need to allow enough time to walk to Tintagel Castle, which is around 600 metres away. Light lunches, drinks and treats can be purchased in the Beach Café, and you’ll also find a shop where you can purchase a souvenir of your visit.
