Wales’ Year of Legends launched
Visit Wales’ campaign invites visitors to discover the nation’s myths and legends.
Following on from the success of Visit Wales’ 2016 Year of Adventure initiative, which saw the nation celebrate its very own adventure playground of mountains, coast and unspoilt countryside – with record-breaking visitor numbers to the country as a result – the Welsh tourist board has launched the 2017 Year of Legends campaign.
The Year is set to focus on Welsh heritage, myths and legends and visitors can expect to find a rich and inspiring programme of events and exhibitions, tours and trails across the nation's historic attractions.
Official ambassadors for this special Year are singer-songwriter Cerys Matthews and Game of Thrones star Iwan Rheon. The actor commented: “I’m really excited to be a part of this project. I was so lucky to have Wales’ stories, history and culture as part of my upbringing. Our stories and characters are fascinating and become truly spellbinding when you visit the landscapes and places where these tales and stories are rooted – you’re never far from a piece of history in Wales.”
Wales has more castles per square metre than anywhere else on earth, all with fascinating stories awaiting discovery.
The nation will be promoted as the land of storytelling, celebrating the forthcoming release of the Guy Ritchie film about King Arthur, and recognising global talent inspired by Wales, from Roald Dahl to Laura Ashley and Richard Burton.
Events will include A Merlin Festival in Carmarthenshire in March, The Tournament, in Conwy in June, and Landscape Legends - Pop-Up Experiences by Snowdonia Active.
The Year of Legends is the second of three themed years, with Year of the Sea planned for 2018.
