The UK’s biggest Mountain Festival is creating two free pop-up events this summer, set in the beautiful Lake District.
Kendal Mountain Festival is reaching out beyond its award-winning November event to bring the big screen to open-air locations in Grasmere and Ullswater, this June and July. With Cumbria’s most dramatic natural scenery as a backdrop, audiences can expect to be wowed by the best action adventure films from around the world.
Each evening will also feature top speakers, live music, food and drink plus plenty of fun for all the family. The events are funded and supported by South Lakeland District Council, Eden District Council and the Cumbria Local Enterprise Partnership to support communities and businesses affected during the floods last December. The dates are: Grasmere on 24 and 25 June, and Ullswater on 23 July.
Clive Allen from Kendal Mountain Festival said: “We’re really excited as these events allow us to showcase the ‘best of the best’ films we love, plus bring along our top adventurers and entertainers. Why not make it a couple of days? Explore these stunning areas by day, then enjoy an evening of inspiration in the wonder of wild places and adventure.”
South Lakeland District Council’s portfolio holder for Culture, Arts and Events, Councillor Chris Hogg, said: “We are delighted to support Kendal Mountain Festival to bring this unique event to Grasmere, particularly to help support the community and businesses as they recover from December’s flooding. Kendal Mountain Festival has been hugely successful throughout the years and is recognised worldwide and really puts the area on the map. More importantly, the festival is a key part of the Adventure Capital tourism strategy and our festival portfolio which continues to grow and is vital to the local economy. It’s also a great inspiration to our local athletes and film-makers.”
Grasmere, in the heart of the Lake District, is a picturesque village surrounded by spectacular fells and peaks. The natural beauty of the area has provided inspiration for painters, poets, writers and craftsmen and over two evenings, on Friday 24 and Saturday 25 June, Kendal Mountain Festival is bringing its award-winning combination of films and entertainment to this inspirational setting. Then on Friday 23 July the Outdoor Cinema transfers to the glittering lake of Ullswater in the north-east Lakes.
Nathan Rye from the Grasmere Business Association explained: “The business community and Grasmere Business Partnership are delighted to welcome Kendal Mountain Festival to Grasmere on the 24 and 25 June. For the whole community this could not come at a better time, as it will only be six weeks from the reopening of the A591.”
David Hymers, Economy Portfolio Holder for Eden District Council commented: “We are really keen to support the Ullswater Open Air Cinema event following the massive impact of the floods in the area. Kendal Mountain Festival has a huge following and we look forward to them hosting a great event with the beautiful natural backdrop of Lake Ullswater.”
