Such is the craziness of our global food industry, the 'new' of 'new potatoes' doesn't really seem that significant these days. Thanks to air freight they are pretty much available all year round. Not so long ago, when we ate with the seasons, the arrival of the first potato of the year was an event. A marker that the winter was behind us and the soil was once again offering up hope and nourishment for the coming months. Traditionally our earliest potatoes to hit the shelves in this country are the Jersey Royals. The island is well suited to the production of early potatoes due to the higher than average temperature than on the mainland.
