Towbars for cars have had to be type approved under European regulations since 1998 and now most motorhome towbars have to be similarly approved, subject to the type approval status of the vehicle. The original regulations were laid down in European Directive 94/20 EC and in 2012 this was superseded by UNECE Regulation 55.01 commonly known as Reg 55.
