ViewRanger launches AR feature
The popular navigation app ViewRanger now features augmented reality for walkers and outdoor enthusiasts.
ViewRanger today launched Skyline, a feature within the app that identifies landmarks in the user’s surrounding landscape, overlaying them on their device’s built-in camera view.
The feature, initially available for iOS devices, is designed to help people explore outdoors with greater confidence and to help identify places on their route such as mountain peaks and urban settlements, up to 20 miles away. Waypoints and directional arrows also appear when the user is following a pre-planned route in ViewRanger.
Members of the Camping & Caravanning editorial team were among those to help test an early version of the feature, providing feedback to ViewRanger on its performance.
Craig Wareham, ViewRanger co-founder and CEO said: “Skyline tells you what you’re looking at and shows you which way to travel, fundamentally changing the way in which you use maps and how you interact with the landscape around you.
“When we started ViewRanger, our vision was always to place map information directly into the landscape around the user. Now, a little more than 60 years since Wainwright’s first guidebook for the Lake District fells was published, Skyline makes that a reality. It’s ready for anyone to use on their next walk, hike, bike, or visit to a park.”
The ViewRanger app is free to download for both iOS and Android, though Android users will have to wait a little longer for the Skyline feature on their devices.
