Linger a while on this friendly campsite in southern Scotland.

Moffat will be closed from 18th January 2015 until 13th March 2015 due to site redevelopment works.

Moffat is our Club campsite in the Scottish lowlands. It’s an ideal stopping off point for journeys through Scotland. This pretty Victorian Spa town is just three minutes off the M74. But Moffat is much more than just a pit stop, its idyllic location more than warrants a longer stay.

The 180-pitch Moffat campsite boasts a fine setting in a wide valley surrounded by magnificent scenery. The well laid out site has a good range of well-placed facilities catering for all campers needs.

If you choose to linger a little longer in the area, the town of Moffat is a great place to start your exploration. Just a five minute walk from the campsite, the town boasts one of the broadest high streets in Scotland. Here you'll find the fountain topped by the statue of Colvin Ram, the famous Moffat Toffee Shop and the Star Hotel which appears in the Guinness Book of Records as the narrowest hotel in the world. Moffat also offers a variety of shopping including a weekly market on Fridays and a monthly producers market.

Nearby Station Park offers a  variety of attractions including a boating lake and gardens. Next to the campsite the Hammerlands Centre has a garden centre, cafe and fishery.

The town holds an annual walking festival in October and from the campsite you can access some of the finest hilwalking in the south of Scotland. Also close by is the Grey Mares Tail, a magnificent waterfalldropping 200ft from Loch Skene.

There are also a number of historic houses and castles in the area. Drumlanrig Castle near Thornhill - Scotland’s oldest inhabited house - contains artwork by Rembrandt and Da Vinci and has wonderful landscaped gardens and woods. Medieval  Caerlaverock Castle is located close to nearby  Dumfries.

Although the shower blocks are now bright and modern the actual showers are very disappointing.

Although the shower blocks are now bright and modern the actual showers are very disappointing. The cubicles are very small with not much room to move. There would not be enough room for a parent and child. The drying area soon gets wet from the shower leaving no dry space to get dried. The floor slopes away from the drain causing the water from the shower to go under the cubicle door and collect in the centre aisle so you not only have to mop the shower but the aisle as well.

We made an over-night stop at Moffat on our way up to the Isle of Mull. We just arrived on spec with no booking and were made most welcome by the wardens. The site facilities block was not open due to an unfortunate delay in building completion but this did not trouble us as we were only staying one night. By way of compensation we were offered a 10% refund. The site was immaculate with many improvements to the paths and grounds. The wardens offered a wealth of information about the lovely town of Moffat and surrounding countryside and we would certainly recommend this site for a handy stopover or indeed a relaxing longer break.

Despite the previous comment and having been advised that there were no toilet facilities or electricity as a result of a contractor delay we booked on the morning of our arrival. As it happened the electrical powerpoints were available on our arrival and it may be that I had misheard the facilities that would not be available. It was disappointing that no discount was offered at time of booking when the toilet facilities on site were not available to campers. No criticism of on site staff whatsoever but surely in these circumstances members should only have to pay for what they get. I will be returning to the site as it is a lovely area with friendly hard working staff. Under normal circumstances I would recommend the site wholeheartedly. We were informed the toilet block would be fully operational by 16 March, three days after the site was due to open after refurbishment. A response would be appreciated.
