Camping near the lovely moors and beaches of North Devon.

Our Umberleigh Club campsite in the Taw Valley is surrounded by rolling hills and meadows and is close to the moors and beaches of north Devon.

This peaceful family-friendly site enjoys a rural location with lovely views over the surrounding countryside. Facilities on site include clean, well maintained toilets and showers, a children’s play area, games room with infant's play area, skittles, table tennis table, table football and pool. There is a TV lounge, fishing pool and dog walk. There are also two tennis courts for hire, with free tennis coaching for children during school holidays.

A quarter of a mile from the campsite is the village of Umberleigh. Here you will find an art gallery, an antique shop and a local pub. Umberleigh is also one of the stations on the picturesque Tarka Line which runs between Barnstaple and Exeter.

For clean, sandy beaches and surfing head to Westward Ho, Saunton, Woolacombe and Ilfracombe and for family days out there’s the factory outlet Atlantic Village and Atlantis Adventure Park, Bideford, The Milky Way, The Big Sheep and the Quince Honey Farm.

There is a pub close by, The Rising Sun, but no footpath and a busy road meant that I didn't attempt to walk there. The bus service into Barnstaple was restricted to one a day but was well worth using and a lovely town to visit. There is also a train station nearby that runs a more regular service to various destinations thereabouts. The showers were of the push-button variety, which I do not care for but at least the shower stayed on longer than some I have encountered. The facilities could have been warmer as early mornings in October can be quite chilly. All in all an enjoyable stay and on leaving, the site warden took the opportunity to wish me well and hoped I had had a good stay.

Great welcome to great site with good views. Well maintained facilities. We found all the staff so helpful. There is a nice dog walk which our dog Jasper loved. Will be going back again soon. Thank you all for making our stay 10 out of 10 John & Pat + Jasper

This is a lovely, clean, well run site.

This review is for Umberleigh

This is a lovely, clean, well run site. I was a little concerned about there only being 3 showers, however I did not queue once for a shower, morning or evening. The site is sloping and we did pitch on a slight incline. Umberleigh is further away from the coast than I realised, therefore you really had to drive everywhere. Umberleigh has a small railway station with trains hourly to Exeter and Barnstaple (which seems to be the central hub) with most locations navigated through Barnstaple or so it felt! Barnstaple is 20mins by car or approx. 10 by train. Westward Ho is approx. 30mins away and I think is the closest beach. Whilst staying here we also experienced the muck spreading in the next door fields and some stubble burning. And while there is nothing the club can do it should be mentioned in the brochure etc that the site is very "rural". We brought bikes and had hoped to cycle but there appeared to be a distinct lack of cycle ways, bridleways or general footpaths, although the Tarka Trail runs through Barnstaple, it was not somewhere we felt safe riding to so took the train, rode a little and used the train back to site. This was disappointing as previously we have ridden almost everyday. Although the site is lovely, clean, well run, friendly and all the things you would expect from the club, we probably wouldn't return as we found it just too far from anything and no real opportunity to leave the car behind.
