Hamza Yassin joins Camping and Caravanning Club members to bury time capsule capturing camping life in 2026

TV presenter and wildlife cameraman Hamza Yassin joined members of The Camping and Caravanning Club to bury a time capsule capturing a snapshot of camping in 2026, as part of the Club's 125th anniversary celebrations.

 

The capsule, buried at Clent Hills Camping and Caravanning Club Site, contains memories, pledges and mementos contributed by campers from across the UK during the anniversary year. Hamza was joined by three competition winners to attend the ceremony after submitting pledges for future campers, which were included in a commemorative book placed inside the capsule alongside other artefacts representing camping life in 2026.

 

Hamza Yassin, President of The Camping and Caravanning Club, said:

 

"Camping has a wonderful way of bringing people together. What makes this time capsule so special is that it has been shaped by campers themselves, capturing not just what camping looks like in 2026, but the experiences of the people enjoying it today.

 

"It's exciting to think that one day future generations will open it and discover what mattered to campers in our time, from the equipment we used to the memories we made and the messages we wanted to leave behind."

 

Sabina Voysey, Director General of The Camping and Caravanning Club, said:

 

"This time capsule captures a moment in time for camping in 2026. From members' pledges and memories to everyday items that reflect life on our sites today, it provides a fascinating snapshot of our community during our 125th anniversary year.

 

"The tents, caravans, motorhomes and equipment future campers use may be very different from those we rely on today, but the reasons people go camping are unlikely to change. Spending time outdoors, switching off from daily pressures and making memories will always be important, and camping remains one of the best ways to enjoy those experiences."

 

The capsule has been buried at Clent Hills because of its special significance to the Club. The site was dedicated in 1937 as a memorial to Thomas Hiram Holding, founder of The Camping and Caravanning Club and widely regarded as the father of lightweight camping.

 

Founded in 1901, the Club was established by Holding to encourage more people to enjoy the outdoors. Today, more than a century later, members continue to embrace the same spirit of adventure, connection and time spent in nature.

 

The capsule's contents include a special edition of the Club's 125 Camping Pledges booklet, a selection of Club publications, camping memorabilia, a 2026 membership card, a staff uniform and a copy of Two Shillings a Day, an illustrated book chronicling Thomas Hiram Holding's pioneering bikepacking journey.

 

A commemorative plaque and a crab apple tree have also been installed alongside the capsule. The tree will provide a lasting focal point for the site while supporting pollinators and local wildlife.
