Her Majesty The Queen
Friday 09 September 2022
It is with great sadness The Camping and Caravanning Club learns of the loss of Her Majesty The Queen.
Queen Elizabeth II has been a much loved and hugely admired part of people’s lives in the United Kingdom and around the world, and leaves an incredible legacy.
Sabina Voysey, the Club’s Director General, said: “We are deeply saddened by the news and on behalf of the Club, I would like to pass on our sincere condolences to His Majesty The King and to the Royal Family.”
As heartfelt tributes are being made around the world, it is with a great sense of pride that we can reflect on our own fond memories of Club members meeting Her Majesty the Queen. One of the Queen’s early engagements after she succeeded to the throne was a visit to the Club’s stand at the annual British Food Fair at Olympia in September 1952, where she met Stephen Hilhouse, the Club’s President.
There was an account of the visit in the Club’s magazine, which ended with the words: “History has been made. Our President has been introduced to the Queen – and with that honour our Club has been honoured too, and perhaps we have contributed a little to interest Her Majesty in our pastime.” In 1989, the Queen signed a lease allowing The Camping and Caravanning Club to develop a campsite in the heart of her personal Sandringham Estate in Norfolk. The Queen later visited the campsite in its early days where she met members.
The Sandringham Club Site was formally opened by His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, in 1990 and remains one of the most beautiful in the Club’s network. Prince Philip was Patron of The Camping and Caravanning Club for nearly 70 years until his death in 2021.
Sabina added: “At this time of great sadness, these are special memories of the Queen from the Club’s history that we can all treasure.”
