Visiting the Battle of Hastings, Abbey and Battlefield
The Battle of Hastings was arguably the most famous and historically important battle in English history.
In 1066, William of Normandy defeated King Harold of England. Consequently, William the Conqueror founded Battle Abbey as amends for the bloodshed.
For the next 400 years, the abbey thrived as a Benedictine monastery and is now open for the public to visit.
Dogs on leads are welcome to explore the entire site, including the Duchess of Cleveland’s Walled Garden teeming with fruit trees and wild flowers.
There are toilets and car park facilities on-site; the latter has a flat all-day fee.
The contemporary café sells a variety of food and drinks and has both indoor and outdoor seating, offering wonderful views of the gatehouse.
There is also a picnic area for visitors with a packed lunch.
