Cyclists, listen up. National Route 27 of the National Cycle Network passes just 200 yards from Tavistock Campsite, offering direct access onto the Devon Coast-to-Coast cycle route. This section crosses from Ilfracombe to Plymouth for a stretch of 99 miles, over two-thirds of which are traffic-free.
A 20-minute drive south of Tavistock brings you to Sheepstor - a tiny picturesque village made famous by its starring role in Stephen Spielberg's film 'War Horse'. Look out for a magnificent granite church dating back to the 15th century and a prominent rocky outcrop known as 'Sheeps Tor', after which the village was named.
Other local landmarks include Lydford, a small village around 8 miles north of the campsite. Visit the spectacular Lydford Gorge, which stretches for over a mile from the dark ravine of Devil's Cauldron whirlpool to the crashing White Lady Waterfall. Lydford is home to many other sites of interest including a 13th-century mound tower, an early Norman earthwork castle, and Saxon town defences.
