Newark Castle was first built from timber around 1150AD and rebuilt in stone towards the end of the century. At the end of the English Civil War the castle was partially deconstructed. The grounds inside the castle are now used for the Gilstrap Heritage Centre. It’s where Britain’s infamous King John the Bad died and some believe it holds the secret to the lost treasure of the crown.
