11/12 December: Geminids Star Camp

We are extremely fortunate to be located in the largest Gold Tier International Dark Sky Park in Europe. Although not quite as dark as the area of Kielder Observatory (perhaps book a night there also?), we score very close to it on the darkness scale for these events as all site lighting is reduced. As a result, if the skies are clear,we are provided with a stunning display of more stars than you might have seen before!  Because of this, we have engaged astronomers to help us hold Star Camp weekends on two occasions each year: March and December.

Our annual Geminids Star Camp weekend in December coincides with an approaching new moon that rises in the early hours of the morning, hence the darkest possible skies! We need the darkest skies for the best view of deep space objects through telescopes and the often colourful shooting stars that are the Geminid meteors! The date provides us with a possible view of Mars, Jupiter and Saturn, together with distant galaxies, nebula and star clusters! The date has been chosen, as ever, in consultation with Rob Ince, our fantastic expert lead astronomer.

The weekend entails 2 nights of expert help in viewing the night sky by naked eye and also through one of the 2 or 3 large telescopes brought on site by our host astronomers, led by Rob. There will also be one or more talks held in our warm indoor refuge (Wansbeck House), free hot drinks whenever required, together with 'warm-ups' in front of our log fire if necessary. A special hot drink is on offer on the Sat night.

Tickets  required to participate in the Geminids Star Camp: £11.50 PER PERSON for both nights, £8.50 per person for 1 night.  This is fanatastic value compared to astronomy events nationwide!! Children are half-price.  Guests must be camping on-site to participate.

Note that your own vans must not leak white light of any kind during the weekend, whether the weather is on our side or not. We will have spare red acetate film to cover torch heads if required.

NB. Normal bookings for a camping pitch do not entitle the camper to the additional Star Camp ticket. Star Camp Tickets must be requested by phoning the Site direct (01434 220175) and are limited to approx. 25 pitches (50 people places). Note that the events are very popular with several regular attendees. If you do not phone to add a ticket to your pitch booking, it is likely you will not be able to attend!

We hope to welcome you here for a fascinating stay!
