Land Rover is the most popular towcar manufacturer according to a recent survey by Club Care Insurance.

The research was conducted to discover how much variation there is between the towcars caravanners currently drive and the towcars they would actually like to own – and there were some surprising results!

Land Rover was voted as the most popular with 19 per cent of people identifying the manufacturer as their first choice of towcar; however the majority of people (18 per cent) actually drive Ford models.

Car manufacturers that are also admired - and are the towcars that caravanners’ actually currently drive - include; Toyota, Hyundai, Mercedes-Benz and Nissan.

Club Care also found that the majority of caravanners prefer to drive diesel powered cars (86 per cent) and almost everyone agreed that they would purchase a diesel towcar again (92 per cent).

Just two per cent of people chose a hybrid as their next preferred choice of towcar and no one wanted to own an electric car, raising questions about sustainable towing in the future.

And it seems caravanners would prefer to use automatic transmission with 43 per cent of people already driving an automatic towcar – and in addition, over half the people interviewed would replace their current car with an automatic.

Nigel Coppen, Client Director at Club Care Insurance, is surprised by the results of the survey and he said: “When deciding to buy a caravan a lot of attention is focused on getting the exact make, model and specification – and it appears to be the same for caravanners’ towcars too.

“It’s really interesting to see the vehicles our customers choose and the gap between their reality and aspirations - hopefully they’ll all get their wishes one day.”
