Camping is often seen as a domestic summer pastime but new figures from The Camping and Caravanning Club’s Carefree Travel Service show that more holidaymakers are now travelling abroad and pitching up during the winter months.

The number of Club winter rally bookings during 2011/12 increased by six per cent and non-rally bookings by eight per cent compared to the previous season as campers made the most of the balmy winter sun.

And the good news continues as 13 per cent more ‘En Route’ campsites were also booked. These campsites are located on popular routes and strategically selected by the Club to help campers safely reach their Winter Sun destinations in Southern Spain and Portugal.

Club member Glenise Cragg pitched up abroad with Carefree and she said: “It’s the best winter we’ve ever had.”

And with three new destinations in Portugal and Spain and better value prices due to the ever improving exchange rate, the Club expects bookings to increase even further this winter.

The Club’s new glove box-sized ‘Winter Camping Sun 2012/13’ guide is now available to members and non-members for £10 which is refunded if a holiday is purchased.

Richard Grimsdale, Travel Services Director, is delighted by the news and he said: “This guide is a real ‘must have’ if you’re planning to holiday or ‘live’ on a site abroad over the winter period.

“We’ve got some great new European destinations for all campers to enjoy including a new winter sun rally at the Marjal Costa Blanca campsite, which is 26 miles from Alicante, has an array of facilities and is a great base for exploring the mountains, nature parks, history and rural hinterland.

“We’ve recorded some fantastic figures for 2011/12 and we fully expect to see even more winter travellers escaping to the good life later this year.”

Carefree customises every holiday to meet members’ needs from booking ferries, campsites and insurance to a fully inclusive holiday at the best possible price.
