Campers and caravanners across the UK can be assured of the highest quality toilets at their camp site, after The Camping and Caravanning Club received the highest accolade in the toilet world, becoming Overall UK Winner in the 2006 Loo of the Year Awards, beating others in the tourism sector, commercial premises, education, and transport providers alike.

The 400,000-strong Coventry-based Club – with around 100, multiple award-winning camp sites across the UK – was presented with the prestigious Award at the UK National Awards Ceremony at Birmingham’s National Motorcycle Museum on Friday 8 December.

Alongside the Overall Winner award, 15 Camping and Caravanning Club Sites were recognised by Loo of the Year. Ten Club Sites received 5 Star Awards, taking the Club into the Champion’s League for maintaining a consistently high standard of loo management on all Sites. Five further Club Sites achieved 4 Stars.

The Glencoe Club Site was named National Loo of the Year Winner in the Holiday Park category for Scotland. The Site at Glencoe, a recent addition to the network, is well known for its breathtaking views of the mountains and the surrounding woodland.

The following Club Sites achieved 5 Star Awards: Barnard Castle, Boroughbridge, Clent Hills, Folkestone, Glencoe, Kessingland, Kingsbury Water Park, Sandringham, Slingsby and Veryan. California Cross, Clitheroe, Milarrochy Bay, Scarborough and West Runton all received 4 Star awards.

Mel Hill, Chairman of The Camping and Caravanning Club’s Sites Committee, says: “Our Club Sites have a strong reputation for both friendliness and cleanliness. Many campers choose to stay at our Sites because they know they will find facilities of the highest standards – so it is particularly good to have this confirmed by the independent inspectors at the Loo of the Year Awards.”

Loo of the Year Awards are given annually following an independent, unannounced check by an authorised Inspector. He or she judges from a wide range of criteria, including clear signage, the provision of sufficient cubicles and the highest standards of hygiene. Find out more about the Loo of the Year awards.
