Tents for youngsters through the years

My first tent cost 39/6d, bought with savings from my newspaper round. It appeared to be a bargain but proved to be a disaster. On our first outing, the lack of waterproofing and groundsheet, and flimsy doors left me enduring a cold, wet and miserable night. It was good lesson in the perils of false economy. Many years later, my son Matthew, then aged ten, decided he wanted a ‘proper’ tent rather than share the family tent. Tempting though it was to go for a cheap option, I didn’t want to put him off camping for life and knew that he was likely to carry on cycle-camping.
