Caravanners encouraged to check tyres for Easter
Caravanners and motorhomers planning their first big camping adventure over Easter are being reminded to check their vehicle tyres before hitting the road.
The message is being supported by an animated video from TyreSafe.
If the caravan or motorhome has only recently been brought out of a winter lay-up, it’s more important than ever that the vehicle’s tyres are thoroughly checked.
Tyres deteriorate more rapidly when not in use, especially if left exposed to the elements and if they have been supporting the vehicle’s weight.
The tyres on caravans and motorhomes (up to 3500kg) must have a tread depth above the legal limit of 1.6mm across the central three quarters of each tyre’s width and its entire circumference.
A 20p piece can be used as a guide to see how close the tyre is to the legal limit. Insert the 20p into the main tread at various points around the circumference – should you see the outer rim at any point, you need to have the tread depth checked as it may be illegal.
Also, be sure to look for signs of damage such as lumps, bumps or cuts in the tyres, and cracking in the sidewalls. And remove any objects caught in the tread with a blunt tool.
Check out this caravanner-friendly animated movie produced by Tyresafe to show owners how to carry out these simple checks.
