Club magazine gets new eco wrap
The September issue of Camping & Caravanning is the first to be sent out in a new plant-based environmentally-friendly poly bag, instead of a plastic one.
This new packaging is made from recovered potato starch that is derived from leftover spuds that don’t make it into the food chain. Although more expensive to produce, the Club has taken the decision to use the new bags to reduce its impact on the environment and following strong feedback from members.
NEED-TO-KNOWS ABOUT OUR MAGAZINE WRAPPER
- It takes 1,600kg of potato waste to wrap our entire 200,000-copy print run
- One potato can be used to make ten magazine wrappers
- The average potato is between 17 per cent and 21 per cent starch
- The potatoes used come from Eastern and Northern Europe
- The bag is 100 per cent compostable
- The wrap takes 52 weeks to degrade in a normal home compost heap
- Normal polythene bags take between 10 and 1,000 years to break down
