Another lovely stay with Richard and Penny at the Gate Lodge.

This review is for The Gate Lodge

Another lovely stay with Richard and Penny at the Gate Lodge. Isn't it a shame though that so many members think they have the right to let their dogs run free without lead's even when the sign on each pitch says dogs on lead's. It spoils it for the owners and the other people staying there.

This review is for The Gate Lodge

My wife & I spent a few days at the site around Easter. The landscape is marvelous, & the peace is almost heavenly. Here, however, any heavenly experience ends, except for the rain that turned the site into a muddy setting. Manoeuvring with the caravan was therefore hardly possible - despite the hard standing. All facilities should always be in a faultless technical condition & their cleanliness is paramount. In the men's shower, the water just dripped out of the shower head. Despite the low flow rate, the drainage was extremely poor. The fact that there are only insufficient shelves & hooks is almost easy to get over. It is very astonishing to inform in the additional toilet only with a sign that the flush button is stuck & one should please make sure that it comes up again. This toilet must be soon put into a technically perfect condition - just as the drain & shower head in the men's shower must urgently be put in order. The owner must take care of the regular basic cleaning & technical functionality - just as every user of the facilities is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness. If the requirements for cleanliness & technical function of the facilities on a campsite are not fulfilled, this is, according to my deep understanding, an absolute knock-out criterion for every campsite. £17 per night would have been reasonable if the minimum requirements for flawless technical condition & clean sanitary facilities had been met. If the operator of the place, for whatever reason, is not able to guarantee basic cleaning, it is completely incomprehensible why a high season price is calculated. It was not possible to address the owners personally about the shortcomings, as they were on holiday themselves. In its current condition, a stay is absolutely not recommended. We fully support the previous review. We will be happy to come back when the shortcomings have been eliminated, because the location & peace of the site would have been worth a recommendation.

We stayed here for a weekend break in March and admittedly we were rather unlucky with the weather with almost constant rain for days, however the makeup of the site and poor maintenance made the conditons horrendous. The access 'road' to the site and each individual pitch is nothing more than a mud track which made reversing a caravan (for others) extremely challenging. It was not possible to walk from your pitch to the main block without getting covered in mud as there is very little in the way of paths between them. It is supposed to be hard standing pitches but at best I would say they were semi hard pitches with an area of road planings which are badly in need of replacement. Some woodchippings had been thrown down in places which soon became part of the mud. It was not possible to step out of your unit without getting extremely muddy which which spoiled our stay. We are no stranger to camping in all conditions and accept you are at the mercy of the weather, but this was bad ! The shower block is badly in need of renovation. It's basic and functional but at £17 per night they are charging top rate prices for low rate accommodation. We would have spoke to the owners in person about this but they have gone away so we were very much left to fend for ourselves. We just couldn't understand the price being charged for this site or how the reviews relate to it in reality. It felt as if the site has just been 'let go' but disguised as 'rustic'. I'm sure the situation would be slightly better in the summer months but unless you have good weather - we would suggest you go elsewhere. Needless to say - we would not recommend.
