The surrounding area

Our Hertford Club campsite is on the outskirts of the attractive market town of the same name and surrounded by rolling countryside.

It’s an easy walk into Hertford with its town square and River Lea towpath walk. And Balls Park close by is excellent for dog-walks.

The Cole Green Way, part of the National Cycle Network, is about 1.5 miles from the campsite, starting at Hertford Football Club it follows a former railway to Welwyn Garden City. There are more recreational options at Hartham Common, just a few minutes’ walk from the town centre.

For days out there’s Paradise Wildlife Park, Knebworth House and Waltham Abbey or you can take a train to London from Hertford East which is a 20-minute walk from the campsite.

The site is well laid out with well- maintained facilities including washing machine and dryers, inside dish washing area, an outdoor play area and dog walk.

This is a wonderful site but for me spoilt by drivers who were repeatably doing in excess of 15/20+ mph which is not acceptable. Children were regularly cycling/playing on or near the road so parents beware. On the bright side it is a well kept and very clean site which i shall visit again but with a lot of caution when visiting with my grandchildren.

We stayed with our dog just before the bank holiday and the weather was great so didn't experience the same as others have mentioned in terms of muddy paths etc. There is an entrance to Balls Park are the back of the site and we took full advantage of this and the fact that Hertford town is in easy walking distance to enjoy some lovely walking . When you're at the site you feel like you're in the middle of nowhere yet it's really close to town centre. I agree with others that there seems to be a small number of showers for the amount of pitches but when we were there the site was almost empty until Friday so it must be a difficult thing to get right. The staff were great: we were pitched near shade for the dog and when we couldn't get to site because of emergency roadworks a member of staff gave great alternative directions and then called everyone they knew we're on the way to do the same.

The access road to the site is narrow with speed bumps that are quite high, particularly on the way out. The deep gouges in the tarmac are testament. Once on the site the main in/out road is metalled, however, the track around the site is heavily potholed and muddy when wet. These pot holes are deep in places and can have the van rocking and rolling. In my opinion the cost of the site and its popularity are grounds for sealing all the roads around the site. The toilet blocks arent fit for purpose. The block closest to the entrance has the largest concentration campers around it and only has three male showers. I found I had to queue on most occasions unless late at night. I stayed over a bank holiday and the site was full. I think the blocks need to be expanded to accommodate the number of campers when the site is full. Overall the site is very well located for trips to London, there are various supermarkets within walking distance and theres plenty of space. Theres a bit of aircraft noise but youre close to the Heathrow flight path so theres no avoiding it.

Recently returned from a week at this site and I feel I have to raise a number of issues.

This review is for Hertford

Recently returned from a week at this site and I feel I have to raise a number of issues. Firstly I must say that in fine weather this is probably a great site but this is the UK and we have to expect wet conditions at various times of the year regardless of season. It is in such wet conditions that this site falls down badly. The hard standing pitches are not big enough to accomodate a caravan, awning and car. Even if you forego an awning the car is still going to have 2 wheels off the edge of the hardstanding. If you have an awning the car either has to park on the grass (impossible due to waterlog conditions) or squeeze in front of the caravan and partially obstruct the roadway. All of the water points are located in the grass areas and do not have solid approach footpaths, therefore a trip to fill the aquaroll is a very muddy experience especially returning to the caravan with the heavy full aquaroll sinking into the mud. The toilet block nearest to where we were pitched had no heating. I am not sure whether or not this was a temporary situation. The access roads around the site are in very poor condition with many potholes. We are experienced caravanners and understand the vagiaries of the weather, which is why we had pre booked a hardstanding pitch, but the Club needs to make sure that all the facilities can cope as well as possible with all conditions.
