Spectacular coastal setting, backed by mountains

Spectacular, breathtaking, choose a superlative – La Paz’s setting in unspoiled Asturias, on a promontory on a sandy beach, with views to the mountains behind and over the ocean in front, is exceptional. Many pitches have probably the most breathtaking views of any we feature – with the coastal mountain range that fringes the famous Picos de Europa behind, and a superb beach below. This is Green Spain at its absolute best, with Asturias remaining one of the country's most unspoilt regions, and La Paz an ideal site for active and adventurous couples and families. There are spectacular terrace pitches (help available for siting), or larger units may prefer the shadier pitches at the bottom of the site, just near the access to the sandy beach and its rock pools. Good facilities and a warm welcome complete the package.

We booked last thing on our way back to Bilbao to catch the ferry.

This review is for La Paz

We booked last thing on our way back to Bilbao to catch the ferry. The previous night had stayed on campsite for €10 which was clean hot water for washing up and showers. La Paz was much more expensive, €30, and no hot water in sight for washing up. Restaurant needed a good sweep to get rid of the fag ends! Too many people and cars. Won't come again! This is not a CCC site as such, they just "rent" some pitches I think but we booked through them, so disappointing all the same. Having said all that, the location itself is beautiful.

First the positives.

First the positives. Great location, direct access to a lovely beach - great surf for body boarding. Staff were very friendly and helpful. On site restaurant had decent food at reasonable prices. Toilet and shower facilities were OK. You need a car to leave site and to access local towns - unless you are happy to use taxis. I would absolutely avoid this site during August, it is ridiculously busy. Tents, caravans and motorhomes are crammed in and there are no discernable individual pitches - more like you's expect to find at a large music festival than a CCC site! Also, it is a difficult site to move larger units about on. We have a 7.9m motorhome and when we arrived (pre-booked many months ago) they had two spaces available. One was completely inaccessible due to the number of cars parked along all the roads and tracks throughout the site, the verges etc. The second pitch was barely accessible, down a narrow dirt track and required the site staff to locate other campers to move a number of other parked vehicles so we could perform a 57 point manouvre in order to wedge our van into a tiny strip of grass between wall to wall tents. Probably as a result of how overcrowded the site was, there was a lot vehicle traffic on the tracks throughout the site. The experience would probably have been quite different had we visited outside of the busy summer period - although I'd suggest you need to be a very confident driver in order to move larger units about this site, even if it were quieter.

Super location 50 yards from the gorgeous beach - the sea is rough for swimming but ideal for surfers/boarders - & lifeguarded in Jul/Aug. The facilities are good - The restaurant has the most stunning views, showering in a cave has to be experienced and the on site supermarket has a variety of provisions including fresh fruit and veg. Expect to be rammed in at peak season - it can feel a bit claustrophobic - although from 20th August it gets much quieter. If you want a sea view pitch, specifiy this when you book - and if you are a caravan owner without a 4*4, the site will use a landrover to tow you up the hill. A short drive to the amazing Picos de Europa mountains is essential including the beautiful gorge walks. There are blowholes approximately 2 miles west of the site - make your way there coming up to a 'high' high tide for the most amazing experience (tide tables are displayed at the site). Also the thermal spring in a river under the bridge to a hotel at La Hermida was wonderful (probably not in any guide book - the locals have just dammed up the spring outlet). Access to the site is difficult. The road down to the site is narrow, steep and winding. At the bottom, wait for staff help which is usually quick to arrive. Please note that if you drive a motorhome you may have difficulty servicing it due to poorly designed access - I tried with little success. Arrive with a full tank - there is a free service point a few miles east on the main road. Finally - may be worth checking on whether there is a fiesta on - be prepared for LOUD music from midnight to 4am if there is! Fortunately this was only 2 consecutive nights for us... I would definitely recommend the site - you have to go with the foibles!!
