Motorhomes in New Zealand tend to be manual transmission (although more companies are introducing automatic) and all companies offer one-way rentals (charges apply).
If you are intending to visit both islands you should book your Interislander ferry in advance – you can still change this at the last minute. Rentals generally include unlimited mileage, kitchen and personal kits plus complimentary airport or hotel transfers.
