Very enjoyable stay. A gem of a site, with lovely views and the friendliest managers and assistant who keep the site looking great and spotless. Local pub gives a discount on food and is good. Lots to do in the area and the little on site walk to the fishing lake is great. Would recommend and will come again.

We have been a few times to this site with my family. Our boys love the play area and freedom plus the play rooms. It's quiet enough and small enough for couples and elderly (when my boys aren't present). Being Christians we found a lovely welcome by the local church down the road who had just had a holiday club running that week and they involved our children in the competitions in the Sunday service even though we were strangers. we hope to have several more happy holidays here.

I stayed here for a couple of days again as I have relatives close by. it is clean, smart & is ideal for only a short stop. if you have dogs consider this, they have to stay on leads, always, especially on the dog walk. if not then the attendants are very quick to rush over & tell you to put them on. I would hazard a guess they are not dog lovers! which is a shame as a lot of us campers & out doors people come with kids AND dogs!

although this site is close to home we could have been miles away. Lovely quiet location just what we wanted. As we don't have children we can't comment on the sporting facilities available. We do however have 2 dogs who absolutely loved the dog walk up to the lake and they were able to be free in the field by the lake. Trisha and Richard gave us a warm welcome and were extremely helpful to us. The site is very well maintained with lovely short grass everywhere thanks to Richard's excellent mowing!
We hope to visit here again as we really felt we were on holiday.

Made to feel very welcome and everyone very friendly and helpful. Loo block clean, bright and lovely and warm which was wonderful as weather very windy and a bit chilly sometimes. Plenty of places to go to from the site involving drives through glorious contryside. Gorgeous fish and chips on site on Tuesdays an added bonus. Ate every night (except Tues!) at the Bell in Chittlehampton - lovely food and friendly staff. Would be happy to go back to this site and recommend it.

Richard and Trish were very friendly and helpful, as novices they made our first caravanning weekend a real pleasure. nothing was too much trouble. The shower block and washing facilities were spotless, the pitches (some were sloping but you are in Devon) and site well maintained. The site is very convenient for exploring north Devon and whilst there were facilities there for families we didn't make use of them. We will be visiting again soon.

Trisha and Richard gave us a warm welcome were on hand if you needed anything, games room is a bonus as there is something for everyone. Skittles, Tv are free and take your 50p's for the table football and pool. Nice area for the toddlers if the weather was bad. Nice pitches and was all well maintained. Local fish and chip van that visits was good food. Nice fishing lake that is a 5 minute walk from the main site so no worries that the kids will fall in. Also a nice walk around the wood that is by the lake. Nice playing field for the children away from all pitches but on a slight hill so can been seen from your unit. Would visit again.

We needed a site in an area we had visited on and off over the last 35 or so years, and chose Umberleigh. We booked 13 nights direct with the site, and the helpful response by Carol set the tone of the whole holiday. Although we knew it was not as near to the coast as we wanted, this proved to be no drawback for us, as it gave us a chance to explore some of the places we loved (Rosemoor), and some new to us (Torrington), and Exeter by train. Carol, Greg, Chris and Marion were so helpful, chats about where to visit, etc. What a little gem the site is! Beautifully kept, both the landscaping and the facilities. I have been on much bigger sites with lesser facilities. Such a fabulously equipped mum/baby/disabled bathroom for such a small site. Although I am not a fan of fixed-temperature, push-button and fixed-head showers, (I'm only 5 foot tall, and they are often far too high for me), these were terrific. The games room was great, we crumblies had a game of skittles, and think its the kind of room to appeal to the 12-18 age group. It even had a Wendy house and play corner for smaller children. We didn't try the walk to Umberleigh, there has been a lot of rain and the ground was soggy and possibly dangerous (maybe not for younger people who like a challenge!!) We missed out the woodland walk to the lake for the same reason. Fantastic views over the wonderful Devon countryside, the sunny evenings with an accompaniment of the sound of combines in nearby fields, and the sunsets, wow! And the fish and chips........to die for! Definitely a "go-back to" site.

Have just returned home from a very relaxing week at the site. All the team deserve a gold medal for keeping the site looking so good and the facilities so clean with the weather against them. Carol's local knowledge of dog friendly beaches where invaluable to us. Greg could not have been more helpful to us on arrival and made us feel very welcome. We do hope that the club can Invest in updates to this site at some point as that would be great for all concerned. A very big thank you.

Lovely welcome from staff, campsite easy to find. Carol was very helpful with copying the supermarket details when I was trying to write them down on a scrap of paper. (thank you). The camp site was beautiful clean and tidy aswell as the facilities. Shame about not having hot water one day but it didn't cause too much of a problem for us. Lots of places to visit the Dinosaur and Tropical Garden place at Ilfracoombe was lovely. It is a shame that you always seem to get a noisy family on your site at some stage but luckily we left the following day(felt sorry for those staying though)! Would visit again.

Just returned from a three night stay. (2 adults and 3 teenagers) The site was very well kept and the toilet and shower facilities were kept clean. The wardens are helpful and assisted us when our vehicle broke down on site. Club rules are upheld which makes staying at the site enjoyable for everyone.
The games room ( which includes a TV) is really good as is the seperate field for ball games.
We found the dog walking field was more than adequate for our 2 border collies to be exercised whilst on the lead.
A quiet location with lovely views and a short drive to the local coastline.

We've just returned frrom Umberleigh and cannot thank Carol & Greg enough for being so friendly, pleasant and helpful. Unfortunately we had to stay longer than planned cos of my husband being admitted to hospital. With only a little bit of 'tweeking' we were told we could stay as long as necessary but may have to move pitch, but luckily we only needed a couple of extra days and without the need to move. The site is well kept, grass mown regularly and the facilities maintained and kept clean. Its a perfect location for beaches at Woolacombe, Ifracombe, Croyde Bay etc etc. We do not have a dog, so cannot comment on the dog walking areas...which seems a petty reason for giving this site the 'thumbs down'. We would definitely come here again. Once again thanks Carol and Greg, you are a very good advert for 'The Friendly Club'!

After touring Somerset we decided to finish off the week with a visit to Umberleigh! We were so disappointed. We have two Border Collies and as most collie owners will know they need plenty of walks with a running area. The dog walk was a huge field, but we had to keep them on a lead going around the edge. When asking the man of the office if there were places we could walk them outside of the campsite he did not know of any...we thought that all campsite staff are suppose to know things such as that! The lady was very nice and helpful with other queries we had, but we are sorry but we shall not be going back there again. Shame because the site itself was very clean and well kept. We left a day early for home as we were so disappointed.

Carol, Marion, Chris and Greg are to be commended for their hospitality, friendliness and helpfulness.
Following a frantic call from us to see if they could fit us into to their site on the same evening for 5 nights, they pulled out all of the stops to ensure that two units were booked for us and our friends.
Initially booking us in for 4 nights, they then performed miracles and managed to get the last night for us following a cancellation.
We were made to feel extremely welcome and were looked after from start to finish of our stay with them.
The Tuesday night Fish and Chip van is also a fantastic bonus, and gave us a wonderful and surprisingly cheap supper on the night of our arrival.
Many, many thanks Carol et al for all of your assistance.

A pair of Tites (Club member) reviewed Umberleigh Club Campsite...
Found Carole and Greg to be EXTREMELY friendly and helpful. They were a credit to the Club and worked tirelessly. The site itself was maintained to the highest level we've ever seen, with the grass kept closely cut and receiving attention (raking and seeding) as soon as a pitch was vacated. The showers were nice and spacious but you could not control the temperature or flow of the water, which was a disadvantage and could be an issue with youngsters as the water was sometimes quite hot. The play room was a bit of a walk away from the pitches and out of view. This could be an advantage or disadvantage depending on your viewpoint. The view from the pitches was fabulous and gave us magnificent sunsets to watch. Umberleigh itself is not easy to walk to and you have to walk along a short stretch of road with no pavement, then walk down a tarmaced track/bridleway but it is quite mossy and slippy in places and has a 25% hill section eek. We spent 10 days on the site during term time so can't really comment on how suitable it would be for families. But for retired people like us, we would definitely rate the site as 5 star. Well done

exceptionally clean and tidy site to the point of my feeling 'uncomfortable' to put a foot wrong anywhere! lovely couple who look after the place, but maybe a bit too perfect. i stayed mid week for a few days in may. not a child in sight (school term time)& I counted 5 dogs on site, I have two. there is a lovely dog walk, but sadly it shares an area where kids can play football, thus dogs have to stay on a lead absolutely EVERYWHERE .I felt although it had many dog facilities to tick boxes, that it was not 'dog friendly' in the sense of the word. my dogs had done their business on the dog walk & i was taking them on a tour of the site (on leads of course!) & in the far corner where the play area is (not fenced or roped off )is a sun trap,& a seat, i was going to sit a while. but the site man had rushed over to tell me "dogs are not allowed near the play area". Fair point if a sign had said that (kids break them apparently) & if there had been a child anywhere on site, & lastly, if the play actual camp site.I have camped all my life, am a responsible dog owner, have kids & grand kids. This site experience made me feel like, my self & my dogs being there were 'messing up the manicured & perfectly kept facilities'.

Kids playing field and also games room: table tennis, tv, pool, free traditional skittles.
Make sure you use B3226 as per site book instructions, when approaching from M5, so that you by-pass South Moulton centre.

This was our first time camping as a family and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The site staff were very friendly and helpful, and the facilites were absolutely fine for our family of four. It isnt a massive site so you are never too far away from the amenities. I noted the comment about the noise from other campers by a previous poster, and during our stay there was farm work going on nearby until 10pm on occassions. Cant be helped by the site as that is what you get in the country and added to the charm of the site. We shall be back.

This was perfect, the field is slightly sloping, but this wasn't a problem. The facilities are fabulous! Very very clean and the water was always hot. The site is out in the sticks so you get the 'country air' but it's not a problem at all and all part of being in the sticks. This site is perfect for exploring north Devon but is not too far from Barnstaple for essentials. There is a farm shop nearby and a garage that sells everything!
The kids loved the site and on the whole it was very quiet. I do however find windbreak villages that people see the need to create slightly annoying! Why go camping if you feel the need to hide that much!
All in all we had a wonderful time, the staff were amazing, hardworking and very friendly. We will certainly be returning next season :)

We enjoyed a peaceful holiday at Umberleigh. The site is small but beautiful and has a good dog walk. As it was high season we did not have a choice of pitches but we were happy with the pitch given to us. The beaches are a good half an hour away which could be draw back for a young family.
The information room is excellent so there is no excuse not to explore all the other attractions in the area. For anyone with dogs, there are good kennels locally which we used for a day during our stay. It would be so useful if sites could provide information about local kennels.

Very well run site with excellent staff that helped us to get the best pitch, helped with putting up tent and even lent us drinking mugs as we had forgotten ours!
An observation and not a criticism, the site is in beautiful countryside that has many towns and attractions within 10-15 miles but very little on the doorstep, although the pub in Umberleigh was very nice and campers get a discount.
I was puzzled by the excitement of the chip van coming on a Tuesday night; once I had eaten the fish and chips I understood.... they were excellent!
We cycled the Tarka trail and visited local towns and attractions.
I have searched for faults and problems and to be perfectly honest I could not find any!
Keep up the good work!!!

This was an excellent site and I having read the negative comment placed about this site I belive that this person can't have spent time on this site! The facilities were excellent, clean and very good. The site is slightly sloping in some places and in a tent this made things slightly interesting as this was the first site we had been on like this.
The managers of the site were warm and welcoming and made you feel at home. They also arranged for a Fish and Chip van (Tuesdays) to come on site so that you could have freshly cooked fish and chips on the site.
I would recommend this site to people who wish to enjoy the local scennary (spectacular) and to have a lovely break away. We also had our very own spring watch with Swallows nesting in one of the outside facilities.

This was our first visit to this site and is the smallest one we have been to so far. We were given a choice of pitches on arrival which may not be the case in high season. The views are lovely even in the rain which we had!! The facilities are very clean and the only negative comment we have is that there are no shelves in the showers to put toiltries on and the showers have a push button which may have to be pushed at intervals to keep water flowing. There is a fish and chip van that comes on Tuesday evenings which I can reccommend as all the food is cooked to order. The other thing that was a bonus were the discount vouchers to various places we received on arrival and have something for everyone.

We were looking forward to a day out in Barnstaple courtesy of the local bus network but found that the concessions had been withdrawn from the local council and therefore there was only one bus per day. As a Motorhome owner, we were dependent on the service as my wife cannot walk for any great distance. The site managers came to our rescue and offered a lift to the local railway station and even gave me their number for the return trip. This was greatley appreciated but in the end the terrible weather got the better of us and we didn't make it anyway. We left early on the Sunday as the whole weekend was a washout but this has no bearing on the welcome or the potential for a future visit given that we have more luck with the weather. At least we had a great Sunday lunch at the Rising Sun pub (in Umberleigh) en-route to home.

We called in on an off chance that there might any vacancies. Although they should have been fully booked someone left a day early, so we were able to stay. We were made very welcome, and shown to our pitch. The site was very clean, we stayed for a further two nights. It is a lovely site, clean, quiet and restful. I felt very refreshed to go back to work after a long weekend.

A lovely site providing peace, tranquility, a lovely view, with a dog-friendly pub nearby. Very friendly staff gaven us a warm welcom, very clean facilities which would benefit from upgrading but nevertheless are functional.
All helped towards a lovely weekend break

The first time we have stayed at a club site for many years, and was not imnpressed, not what we call for the true camper, ok for holiday camper, (no disrespect to holiday makers), I would recommend camping to anyone.
PET OWNERS BEWARE, our dog picked up 5 TICKS while there, not nice.
We were not impressed at being lead to our pitch and told exacly how to put the caravan, (not true camping).
Maybe this is how it is in all CC own sites these days, maybe it is how it is through the quantity of campers ?
But from now on we will only use the small listed sites where the true spirit of camping is still around.
The cost difference is also a bonus.
apart from that, the site managers were reasonable friendly, and kept the site very well indeed.

Stayed for 12 days in April found the site wonderful and friendly, and with great dog walks. the facilities are not modern but in perfect order and spotlessly clean. I will most certainly be going back. I think that anonymous must be writing a review for another site.

This has become one of my favorite sites. We had a lovely friendly welcome when we arrived and given a choice of pitches. The site was in stunning countryside and extremely peaceful. The facilities were spotless, abundant showers and toilets. My 10 year old was very happy with the range of activities available. Play park, football field, skittles, pool, table tennis and even tennis if you were more energetic. The wardens had only just taken over the park, but they were so efficient and friendly you think they had been there for years. We will be back as soon as we can.

I have stayed on this site on two occasions and would rate this site as excellent. Very good facilities for children - more than is provided on most club sites e.g. games barn, tennis courts, games field and the usual climbing frame. Shower facilities were good and not a problem for my two children (10 and 3 yr old). Dog walking facilities good and i did not witness any dog mess not picked. Dog mess bins are provided. A very peaceful site with nice walks to Umberleigh. Not a lot in Umberleigh, but there is a very nice pub next to the river. A train station is very convenient for trips to Barnstaple or Exeter. A very good site and will return again. Thankyou Unberleigh for a very enjoyable stay.

I don't normally react to the reviews, but the description given by anonymous does not match my feelings. I have been there with my grandchildren, 3 times, and they and I love it.
I even spent a week convalescing there.(My son put the tent up, and took it down)
The information room is excellent.

I have already done one review but feel that I must comment on the review by annonymous. The shower facilities are like many other club sites and are pretty standard for the club and should be perfectly ok for children and if not it would mean that the children should not be on their own because they are too young. This site IS child friendly with a designated sports field and a games room and tennis court. It is more child friendly than many other sites. What other facilities does the annonymous reviewer want? When you go camping you tend to play outdoor ball type games and ample provision is provided for this.People want relaxation and independence and not to be nannyed.
Finally the facilities are in line with other club sites and that is why I use club sites because I know what standard I will get which is good.
I too did not like some of the actions of a minority of dog owners, but you cannot blame the site management for this but the members concerned.
By the way there is also a baby changing room which is not available on all other sites.
You've got my vote Umberleigh, keep up the good work

This is a well maintained site and even has a TV and games room. There appears to be a limited space for tents although not fully utilised during my stay.
The only downside for me was too many dogs. Although there are signs in the dog walking field to keep dogs on a lead this was ignored by some owners. When I am on holiday I do not want to see or hear dogs.
The site would benefit from a couple of street type lights, especially from the main site to the TV and games room.

a fantastic welcome on a very wet and cold Easter weekend! Along with a number of other orienteering families down for the Easter JK2010. My son even felt he should take his wellies off for the toilet block as they were so clean. Congratulations on such a wonderful site. Would definitely stay again.

It has fixed shower heads and push button for water through showerhead to come through and no hot/cold dial knob. Because of no hot/cold control it is quite hot especially not suitable for young children less than 16/older people.
Having said this that it should be made clear that this campsite isn't suitable for young children as there isn't any bath facilities as they are forced to have showers with adult supervision.
There are no signs stating that you have to mop up when you shower. Campsite needs to be deaf aware. Deaf awareness skills would be of huge benefit especially for a lot of the population are deaf regardless of age.
I'm a dog owner and always kept my dog on the lead but have found a few dog owners not keeping their dogs on the leads especially in the dog walking area and some do not clear the dog poos up.
There were some people have a late night chatting session around 10pm and it can be heard to those staying in tents. Apart from the dog walking area and the little woodland nearby there aren't any dog walking available such as public footpaths - it would be great if there were some available as yet the site is in the countryside!
There were no freezer facilities to allow for use of personal ice-blocks instead we had to hire them and they are pricey!
