"Ideal site for exploring Teesdale & the Yorkshire Dales and outdoor pusuits."
Barnard Castle - known as 'Barney' to the locals - is the nearest town to this lovely campsite with its pitches are clustered in small areas, making it feel even more special. It makes a good base for exploring Teesdale and the Yorkshire Dales National Park, as well as being a haven for walkers and cyclists.

We had just rejoined the Club after a break from camping and used this site to practise with our newly acquired caravan.(had previously camped with tents ant trailer tents). The staff were very friendly and helpful and the facilities wonderful, including an excellent dog walking area. The walk into Barnard Castle is lovely (once you find the right path !) and you can then do lots of walks in the woodland by the River Tees.

We were warmly welcomed by the staff who seemed very happy to book us in and show us to our pitch in the dark. The person who showed us our pitch helped unhook and position our caravan.
The facilities were spotless and it was obvious that they were well cared for.
It was a great site and although a little remote, it is a good half hours walk to the town, it was a great place to stay.
Even on the last day, 5 November, when the site was closing all the staff were helpful and friendly.

We decided to opt for a visit to Barnard Castle Camping and Caravanning Club Site.
On arrival to this relatively secluded site, we were met in the reception area by the wardens who presented as being friendly, polite and very helpful.
After being booked-in, we were shown to out tent pitch which was level and thankfully very well drained, as the constant, and sometimes torrential rain, lasted non-stop for the next 3 days.
The site itself is well maintained, with the toilets, showers and dish washing facilities all being very clean, with plenty of hot water on demand.
At the reception area, there are a selection of information leaflets about days out, local attractions and an OS map of the area, etc. The reception also doubles as a shop selling some basic food essentials and ice-cream, etc. A book exchange is also available, which actually costs money to exchange a book (Okay, it’s only 50p but if you are swapping a book surely this should be free!).
There is a fish & chip van that visits the campsite on a Wednesday evening for a couple of hours and the fish and chips are very tasty and are reasonably priced. Unfortunately, during our trip, we ran out of camping gas for our stove and despite the campsite being a gas cylinder stockist, we were advised that they only stock the gas bottle that we required in the summer months and tended only to keep a stock of the larger gas canisters used by … yes, you guessed it, by people in caravans. Anyway a trip into a gas stockist called Richardson’s of Barnard Castle, fixed this issue, but, again in our opinion, yet another example of the C&CC favouring caravans over campers in tents.
In summary, we would still recommend this campsite due to the friendliness of staff and its general location; as it makes a good base for exploring Teesdale and the Yorkshire Dales National Park, as well as being a haven for walkers like us.

We were extremely impressed with this site. The welcome was very friendly, cheerful and helpful. The toilets and other facilities were immaculate. We particularly liked the dog walks and quietness of the site.
We WILL be back and WILL recommend it to lots of people.
I would give one little tip: check the way you get there, we are local so knew to come from a certain point down the A66, if you go at it from the town centre you have to cross a small (ish) bridge. The bridge is ok for a lot of caravans but we would have found it difficult with out twin axel van
Thanks very much for a great stay at this site, all the wardens were very friendly and helpful, and I would have no hesitation in coming back next season. This was our first stay and our first year of membership, and we very impressed with everything, including the old crumblies discount!
thanks again, Mike Green.
SUITABLE FOR: Families
just came back from a weekend at Barnard castle and i must say i was impressed alough it was a little windy everyday still didn't spoil a good weekend away was a loverly nice and quiet campsite and was our first time and sure wont be the last would reccomend to anyone
SUITABLE FOR: Families,Older couples,Peaceful break
Just returned from 3 nights at the site and felt compelled to say how great the whole stay was. Were new to CCC and this site and the wardens are a credit to the club.
So very clean and the pitches are spacious and well laid out.
Only problem now is trying to find when we can return!
The site is surrounded by fantastic countryside and views and so easy to walk into Barny we didnt use the car from arriving.
SUITABLE FOR: Families,Older couples,Active break,Peaceful break
We will come back in the other year ,it is a great campsite greetings from Holland
SUITABLE FOR: Peaceful break
This site is located approximately 1.5 miles from the town of Barnard Castle and is in easy walking distance through the woods. The site is kept in pristine condition by the hard work of the wardens who are all very friendly and helpful. The site has a small playground comprising of a couple of swings and a climbing framework which leads to a slide. Reception has a small shop selling basic supplies, more shopping is available in Barnard Castle. Toilet and shower blocks were immaculate and had plenty of cubicles available. The hard standing pitch that we were on was only just adequate for the size of my van, as we were only using a 390 porch awning we were able to "just" fit the car down the side of the van, if we had used the full awning we could not have got the car onto the pitch because the car would not fit across the front of the van as was requested. The grass area next to the pitches should be used for vehicle parking, campers opposite us were driving cars off and on to the grass, appears to be a silly rule and should be abolished. A lovely site and we will definately be returning, just need to sort out the pitches.
SUITABLE FOR: Families,Older couples,Groups,Active break,Peaceful break
I have always enjoyed this site in the past and have given it 5 stars as the wardens were very friendly and the grass was beautifully kept but I do feel that this year there were a few things that need addressing. Facilities used to be excellent but this year some of the toilets and wash cubicals were kept locked and as there were a lot of children on the site I gave up using them after 2 days as there were no cleaning cloths in the wash cubicals to clean them up before or after use. I also object to having to park the towcar across the front of the caravan obstructing the view when there's plenty of room at the side, no one wants to sit and look at the side of their car all day. It also made the site look very untidy. Then to make matters much worse a very large family with a very small tent and using the car for some of them to sleep in were pitched right in front of us and 4 other caravans when all of the none electric pitches at the bottom of the field were empty. The children didn't bother us and played around their own pitch or in the play area but the noise from them went on well into the night, and the adults would sit in the car with the doors open and loud music playing. We had intended to extend our stay for another 2 nights as we were enjoying the area and the company of friends but decided against it.
SUITABLE FOR: Families,Older couples,Groups,Peaceful break
Another smashing stay at Barnard Castle site-staff friendly and helpful as ever and even the weather was kind.Toilets clean and warm as usual even though site was very busy. There is so much to do in the area and for walkers it is so well placed to get in some excellent walks. We use the site a lot it being within an hour and a halves drive for us but it offers scope for trips to so many other places (Richmond/Ripon/Newcastle).Highly recommended site.

This is the first site we have been to in over 40 years of camping where the reception was closed when we arrived just after 12 noon. After 15 minutes we were checked in and given a pitch next to a noisy agricultural farm road. We tried to look in the shop but it was closed as were the toilet blocks. Our stay was hampered by peoples rush every day to use the toilet/ shower blocks before they closed at an inapropiate time and for far to long. Then on our last day I went to empty the elsan toilet before setting off home at 11am only to find the room with the facility to empty the Elsan was locked. When I spoke to the gentleman cleaner he told me it was out of order and that he had no solution to the problem, I asked if I could empty the liquid contents down a toilet and was told a definate no as were four other people who had elsans to empty. We repeatedly asked what we should do but were told it wasnt his problem. For a site of this size to only have one elsan disposal point is disapointing in this day and age.I suspect this is a normal occurance on this site as the notice that the facility was out of order was neatly typed out on a computer and pinned to the door.I had to return my full cassette to the caravan and bring it home to empty it, not like others who simply emptied theirs on the grass behind the toilet block. This whole experience spoilt what should have been a memorable stay with your club so I will not be staying at that site again
SUITABLE FOR: Families,Older couples,Groups,Active break,Younger couples
We were looking forward to a well deserved break. Our two children and us had booked to go for a weekend break in a dog friendly campsite close to home. The deposit of £25 was paid and we were raring to go. 4 days before our trip, our daughter became ill. When we spoke to campsite, they refusaed to let us change our booking to the following weekend. Even though we were happy for the deposit not to be returned, we wanted them to transfer this to the next booking. We were amazed to be treated like we were doing something wrong, being told that we would lose our deposit and if we wanted to book for the following weekend, another deposit was payable. I hasten to add, we did not reschedule our stay. My family and I like going camping and, althougbh we understand business' have their regulations, it is free to be courteous to your customers and you will be surprised at how many more campers you will get if you remember this. Unfortunately, I do not recommend this site.
Nice site, good location for sight seeing, we had been touring Scotland for 5 weeks and this was our final stopping place on the way home. Unfortunately this was the only club site where half the Toilet/Washhand Cubicles were locked off to save cleaning. This was the only site where I actually queued for a toilet and or washbasin as there were only three of each available.

Great site very helpful wardens they were lovely and helpfull at all times talkative showers spotless site the same added bonus fish/chip van ,age concession great idea no awning fee great this is a little gem please don't tell anybody will spoil it for me J Brannan Durham
thanks to all the staff at the site.It eas clean friendly, toilet block spotless.A quiet site for a relaxing break. The fish and chip van twice brilliant very tasty.Only down side to many pots holes on the site roads this needs sorting. All in all a very good site.
This is our first time at a C&C site. We've bought a caravan this year and with our six month old daughter we are getting away whenever we can. We are members of that other club too and as funds aren't unlimited, only one will be renewed at the end of the year.
I had to reschedule our stay at the last minute - move it forward by a day due to work commitments which was done without issue. I appreciate that this isn't the norm but then, neither was the work situation. It's was either keep my deposit or reschedule and have the full fee and business sense prevailed.
On arrival at the site, the welcome was great. Very friendly. Just one suggestion - put the answerphone in another room (or play it prior to the busiest time of the day).Tryiing to listen and speak whilst that is playing isn't at all helpful.
It was nice being taken to and guided into the pitch - a very nice touch and made things much easier.
The site is immaculate. Even with the rain pouring down, its clear to see that there is a lot of pride in keeping the place tidy. Showers and facilities are kept clean too. Showering at 8pm, the block was still in good order and the weather hasn't let up once.
We paid a £5 deposit for the 'baby room' key and this is good with a M&P baby bath and some really nice *handpainted* decorations in there that look the part. Basic, but spotless.
Certainly a place I would visit again. Certainly would recommend to friends.

My first review i posted was about another site and dissapointing therefore i felt i should send this. The site and wardens were excellent very friendly helpfull and efficient. The site was immaculate all toilets washing up facilities very clean, showers and washing facilities hot & clean, even the grass was mowed prior to us pitching while we waited. Also plenty to see out & about really enjoyed are stay and we will definately go back.Well done C&C compliments to wardens
Having just returned from this site two days early because of the terrible weather, I felt I needed to balance all the reviews that wax lyrical about the place.
Yes it's toilet blocks were warm and clean, but not the gent's, in the afternoon when it rained and children are using it as a playground! The feel of the site wasn't right for us, it's a bit too far out of Barnard Castle to walk, and I find the area a little boring. The booking in took for ever, trying to sell raffle tickets and the like for the Jubilee rather than concentrating on the important things.
My main complaint is the state of the roads which are dirt but with large potholes which makes visiting the toilet block like an obstacle course, with water features.
Will not visit that site again, sorry!
SUITABLE FOR: Families,Older couples,Active break
What a wonderful site.had a three night stay at the end of may,on our arrival we were greeted by the extremely freindly and helpful wardens.there hard work and dedication shows its self in the condition and cleanliness of the site and facilities. We will definately return as there is a lot to do in the area.A site like this is a credit to the club.
we went on this break as a last minute thing and we really enjoyed our week we stayed there. There were lots of different things to do e.g. walks, bowes musiem and other en joyful things. the camp site had a little shop to buy things from, really good facilities and very clean, very friendly staff. we also found a supermarket close by in the town. it also had a children's play area which i found really nice because some of the sites we have been on never, this made us feel that all ages were welcome.
DATE STAYED: June 2011
A lovely site, very well kept by helpful, friendly staff who are keen to oblige. Site feels very safe with security barriers, always good when camping alone. Excellent fish and chips from a visiting van on Wednesdays and Saturdays. All one could want for a brilliant break with so many things to do within an hour's drive. I will certainly return as the town itself is welcoming to visitors and I have lots more to see and do.
SUITABLE FOR: Older couples,Active break,Peaceful break,Younger couples
Had a fab time at this site,we went pony trekking, visited high force and to top our week off we went to the "BARNEY" festival on the bank holiday. A great site for all ages and plenty to do close by we will be back soon. Also the staff are great and friendly and always on hand to help.

Wow what a fantastic site! Immaculately presented and the facilities were of a very high standard.Lovely hot showers that were very welcome as it had been snowing!!
Our party was made up of 3 families and we were kindly located together which was great. The owners were extremely friendly and helpful.
Plenty to do in the area, we visited High Force, Fountains Abbey and Barnard Castle itself. The fish and chip van on Saturday night exceeded expectations.
No complaints at all and will definitely be back!
Returned to this lovely site again with friends, got pitched together near the small play park and toilets which was fine, wardens told the older children they could play ball games up the top of the site while the site was quite. Very clean lovely site nothing was a problem for the wardens when we asked about things to do in the local area. Toilets always clean even when there was snow in April. There is a chip van that visits the site twice a week which was well worth the money and food was great .a must to go to is diggerland in Durham all kids aged 5-48 loved it. Beamish the living museum of the north is also another great thing to do/see.
We will be back to this site!!
We had a very enjoyable week..very clean and friendly site.Plenty of walks within the area.Sorry to come home.Christine & Mark Kent Burley-in-Wharfedale.
DATE STAYED: October 2009
Spent eleven nights on site and everything was excellent, apart from the weather maybe!
Paul and Angie were superb. We were advised about the most sheltered pitches available because it was blowing a gale when we arrived.
The swallow which greeted us on arrival must have set off for Africa that evening because we never saw it again. Lots more birds on and around the site to see and hear.
Loads of places to visit within reasonable driving distance. High Foce and Low Force very impressive after rain. A bit further afield a trip to Smardale Gill near Kirkby Stephen was definitely worthwhile for the red squirrel sighting. Bowes Museum should not be missed.
Loved Angie's blackboard with her thought of the day.
Chippy van excellent.
We'd love to come back for another visit.

This was my first visit but defo not my last, site was very clean, friendly ,and welcoming site manager and his team were always on hand to assist in any way,I will be back a big thankyou to all and well done
we enjoyed the stay very much, it was very windy one day when we were visiting York, when we returned to the site we found that Angie,Paul, Wendy and Rob had taken our awning down and stored everything in their garage to prevent damage to our unit. Thank you so much.
Visited Fountains Abbey, Beamish,Ripon,Durham,
all within an hours travel. Also went to Farmers market and Bowes Show
We very much enjoyed our stay at Barnard Castle Site. It was extremely friendly and we were greeted warmly and shown all the facilities which were available. We were also very pleased and grateful for the help we were given when we had a problem with the gas. This is a site which we would recommend to anyone and we will be making a return visit ourselves.
A very well kept site in a secluded location. The toilet/shower block was superb. The shop was a bit threadbare on stock but useful nonetheless. The nearby town was a textbook view into middle England with its quaint little shops and eateries. Only stayed one night in the end due to unforseen circumstances which was a shame but gave me reason to return.
What a fantastic stay we had here. Angie, Paul and the team do their very best to accomodate, so friendly and helpful. We celebrated a 40th birthday and wedding anniversary here, so must recommend the Fox & Hounds in Cotherstone too for excellent food. Loads to see & do here, a short drive to High Force for great walks, Hamsterley forest for cycling, we even visited the Tan Hill Inn (Britains highest pub)and Angel of the North (which is about an hour's drive away) Even though the weather was very windy and wet at times (which drained really quickly from the pitches)the hot powerful clean showers and facilities were tip top!TV signal is great too usuing just our status aerial. Thanks again team for a wonderful stay!
Loved this site. Quiet and peaceful and yet it was full. The picture in brochure doesn't do it justice as it looks open. The pitches are in cul de sacs and little areas making you feel that you have your own little corner.
Kind and warm welcome. Nice views from pitch. Dog walk brilliant being along a public footpath. Great for kids too as nice little play area and for the little one who loves horses and ponies there are lots to look at. I dreaded the walk through the fields to the woodland and Barnard Castle because of the horses and how the dogs would react but the horses are in fields either side of the path so no worries for horses, dogs or people as they don't get together.
Altogether an excellent site in lovely area. Relaxing break and will be back time and time again to explore the lovely are surrounding it.
We have just enjoyed 7 wonderful days here and found it to be a most excellent site. Paul & Angie and their staff gave us a very warm greeting and were most helpful throughout our stay, which I have to say included gale force winds and heavy rain! However, the weather did not deter from our enjoyment at all and we were pleased to find so much to do in the area. Barnard Castle is a very pleasant town with full amenities (the chip shop does amazing fish bites) and we enjoyed excursions out to Raby Castle, High Force at Middleton-in-Teesdale and even got further afield to Durham, Beamish & Ormsby Hall. Was somewhat disappointed that Bowes Museum charges extra for photography in addition to the entrance fee but still happy to support the local places of interest.
The site itself is kept in pristine condition and the shower block is spotless with steaming hot water The pressure in the showers could be just a tad more powerful but that is merely personal preference.
We would be happy to recommend this site to others and shall certainly have a return visit in the future :)
Another brilliant stay at "Barney". Many thanks to the wardens and their assistants for their friendly welcome and banter throughout our stay.
An excellent site, loads of walks nearby and enough coffee shops and restaurants in Barney and Eggleston to tempt you away from cooking!
We'll be back soon.
At the start of a long tour, this was the best introduction. A suberb welcome by helpful and enthusiastic staff and lots of information about local amenities. Buses a 10 minute walk from the site every hour into Barnard Castle or a 35 minute woodland walk is a good dry weather alternative. The site was hit with gale force winds seriously affecting caravan awnings with the owners absent. The Warden team spent a long time going round the site re- securing awnings and making all safe. Normal facilites kept in excellent condition but the best recommendation is that the Staff are quite superb. I wish that all the sites could reach this standard. The Bowes Museum should not be missed.
What a fab find, once we,d driven past the caravan club site. to find camping club site, No problems though. We were offered a great pitch away from the play area which suited us , I must say we like being offered a choice when we arrive at club sites. We walked into town through the woods which was lovely .but it would be too far to walk back after a pub visit.Morrisons supermarket is in the town centre, Ideal for cooked chicken and bread. We went to Burrells fish and chip shop for tea twice it was so good (they open sundays too)and you can sit in. Did a days walk from High force. good pub near end of walk Strathmore arms i think. This site is also very well set out and organised, plenty of space and the managers seem to know just what we wanted. well done thankyou we will come again
DATE STAYED: August 2011
Excellant camp site with great facilities, staff very friendly and helpful in finding pitch for tent & gazebo. Our 2 children made lots of friends and safefor them to play within site. Site well maintained, especially greass pitches (even during some very wet weather!!) Riding stable next door was very good, even for novice riders. Loads to do in area (cycling / walking) Bowes Museum a must!!! Very quiet site, especially no road noise. Will hopefully be back next summer.
I have been to many club sites but have never been motivated to comment, however I felt the need with Barnard Castle. The site is beautiful. Away from the town but only a lovely, short walk in. The facilities, which are the best I have seen, were vast and spotless and no wonder, as I saw one of the guys sweeping and mopping the gents after 23:00!
Barnard Castle is a town that I did not know but will return to. A bustling market town (the farmers market was on whilst we were there), it has lots of great local shops.
We took the opportunity to visit High Force which was spectacular and well worth the 12 or so mile drive.
All in all, a weekend did not do the site justice and we will definitely be back!
This site is one of the best.
The staff are always very friendly and helpful and just never stop doing their best to ensure the site is kept this way.
Cant wait to visit again.
Thank You very much
Have just spent 7 nights here. The staff are so friendly and helpfull, this is a very well looked after site, the toilets and showers are very clean.
will be going back here again.
Our third visit to this site. Paul and Angi were the new managers for both of our visits this year. They are a genuinely warm and friendly couple who did everything they could to ensure that we we were happy with our pitch. The facilities were excellent and the campsite itself was very clean and well maintained. They have introduced a morning newspaper service and twice weekly visits from a fish and chip van which are very popular. Our 9 year old son loves this site because he can ride his bike around a nice circuit and although the play area is small it is a good meeting place for the campsite children. There is never any noise after 10. Overall I think this site is great value for money - a firm favourite with the whole family.
The Staff were very friendly and helpful. We cannot fault this site. Would thoroughly recommend it. A must visit is the Bowes Museum in Barnard Castle, the museum is one of Britain's Hidden Gems.
Lovely and well kept site within easy reach of the town. The staff were friendly and worked tirelessly, despite the bad weather to keep the site up to an excellent standard, yet still found time to chat. Well done.
Congratulations to Angie and Paul on their 1st year of site Managers. They where ably assisted by Rob and Wendy. The whole team where always available for advise or just a chat/laugh even after a long day. The facilities are excellent and the whole upkeep of the site was 1st class. There a good walks near by and plenty of attractions to visit out and about. All in all a highly recommended site. Can't wait to go back. Well done to them all.
Angie, Paul and their assistants were extremely friendly and helpful - we wanted to extend our stay whilst there and Angie could not have been more amenable. Spacious and airy shower block, good flat site for novice tourers! 'Thought of the Day' board a nice touch. Thankyou!
We are tenters and are not members of the club. However, if all the other club sites are as good as Barney then we will be joining.
We only wanted to test the tent out as we are first timers and the help and assistance we received from Paul was brilliant - he obviously knows his tent poles!
Angie in the office was very helpful and knowledgeable of the area.
The site is wonderfully kept and when we return we will join thanks to this little gem of a site.
As a camper situated near to the previous reviewer "not very happy camper" I would like to comment on how well the situation was handled by the Managers of the site.
If non member groups do not adhere to the Camping & Caravan Club rules then maybe they should find alternative camp sites.
Barney is a well run site, the facilities are second to none and we were not disappointed.
We will definately be back soon and thank the Managers again for a brilliant weekend.
THIS SITE IS VERY GOOD , EVERYTHINK YOU WANT FOR A QUIET BREAK , ITS THE CLEANEST SITE IV BEEN TO AND THE STAFF WERE TOP CLASS , GOIN BACK THIS WEEKEND CANT WAIT .

Just had a great weekend break at Barnard Castle. The site is very well run and the helpfulness of all the staff members was much appreciated. I will have no hesitation in recomending this site and will return.
From start to finish this was a disappointment. Upon arrival we were presented with the rules and regulations of the site which reflected more of a concentration camp than a caravan/camping site.
Total silence is expected to be maintained from 11pm onwards and heaven forbid if you do not want to go to sleep instantly. As a group of young (late 20's), experienced campers, we were made to feel like children from staff and management alike.
All in all, a disgusting experience making a mockery of campers and camping.
SUITABLE FOR: Older couples,Peaceful break
First time camping with the family so I was looking for a site that was child friendly with good facilities and clean and this proved to be a gem of a site. The children made lots of new friends and everyone was very friendly. We are now new members.
The road in is a bit tricky been only a single lane but the enterance is easy but you could drive pass it.
The welcome is friendly and helpful.
The atmosphere on the site is quiet with the random out break of children laughing and enjoying themselves.

WOW ! This site was recommended to us and we weren't disappointed. Honestly cannot think of anything negative to say. The welcome was great and the toilets, washing up facilties and laudrey were spotless and in perfect working order at all times of the day. Individual washing cubicles provide privacy with extra touches such as additional lighting above the mirrors/wash basins and in the shower cubicles. Also washing lines very useful and thoughtful. A small playground and plenty of space to ride bikes kept our children entertained all weekend, leaving the adults time to relax! We will be back very soon. Thank you
The welcome at this site is second to none! Paul, Angie and their staff were superb! They were so helpful and accommodating and made our stay feel special. We feel this is the best run site we've ever visited. Everything is maintained to the highest degree. We definitely want to return!!
Paul and Angie were extremely professional and very friendly and helpful at our stay in Barnard Castle. After travelling from Wexford, Ireland we were welcomed with a wonderful site and Barnard Castle is a lovely spot to explore, Town has a good range of shops and places to eat. The site is beautifully maintained and spotlesly clean. We loved the thought of the day.
Many many thanks to Paul and Angie we had a cracking time and will be back again soon.
This is an excellent site. Very well kept by hard working and friendly site managers and assistants. Toilet block is kept immaculate at all times. Grass is also well kept. Lots of nice walks in the area including a walk into Barnard Castle. Lots of nice village pubs not too far away in the area with some excellent food.
This site is one of the best that we have visited over the last 4 years the wardens are very friendly and helpful, the site is kept to very high standard and I would not hesitate to recommend it to any one who likes to enjoy the countryside either walking or cycling as there are many footpaths and bridleways in this area.
Angie's thought of the day is a nice touch.
The friendly attitude of the wardens creates a very friendly feel to the site which is sometimes missing from lots of sites nowadays.
The fish and chip avn that visits the site on Wednesday and Saturday evenings is excellent.
An altogether good experience.
This site is the ideal for persons of all ages, from the moment we arrived we felt very much at ease the managers and assistants were very helpful and friendly, the facilities were excellent and the site as a whole was very well presented.
Angie's thought of the day board was something different and just had to read every day.A Big thankyou to the staff for going the extra mile.
The fish and chip van that visits the site on Wednesday and Saturday is a must!!!!
Our virst visit with my grandchildren. Had a wonderful weekend.Angi went the extra mile to make sure every thing was booked correctly and gave us a wonderful welcome. The site is immaculate as is the shower block. The privacy cubicles were a welcome sight. We are now returning in August for our summer break and cant wait to explore the area. Definately recommend this site for a peaseful break.
We have never left a review on any site previously visited but felt we must on this occasion. What can we say? Fantastic site, fantastic managers/wardens on site and such a peaceful place to stay. Even though we had made an error in booking the pitch (booked a non electric when we thought it was with electric) nothing was too much trouble for Angie & Paul who accommodated us on a 'pitch' with electric hook-up. The toilet block and facilities are spotless as is the site. The fish and chip van on the Saturday was a treat too! Barnard Castle close by and well worth a visit so too is High Force Waterfall near Middleton-in-Teesdale. We enjoyed our stay so much we have booked a further stay next month, the correct pitch this time of course!
We had a wonderful time yet again. This is our 2nd time at the site this year and have found that Angie and Paul to be very friendly and approachable. Check-in was promptly carried out without any fuss.
The toilet facilities and dish washing areas are always spotlessly clean. There are plenty for the kids to do whether it be catching fresh water crayfish in the stream or just playing around the site.
The more out-going among you can go riding at the stables behind the site.
Have just spent a lovely week here, what a wonderful secluded site very peaceful, the wardens keep the site spotlessly clean and tidy, toilet block very clean indeed, there's a fish and chip van calls twice a week. a 25 min walk takes you into town with plenty of shops and a supermarket plenty to see in surounding area, we shall be back.....
Hi, What a wonderful and peaceful site this is very well kept clean and tidy, toilets are spotless with privacy cubicles ( wish all club sites had privacy cubicles), there is a fish and chip van twice a week and there good, about 20 to 30 min walk into Barnard castle town plenty of shops, wardens very helpful and friendly a 5 star site we will be back very soon.
We were staying here as part of the W2W cycle route. The couple running the site could not have been more helpful. They even stored our dairy as we stayed when it was really hot. The facitlites were spotless. We even had the entertainment of the sheep being rounded up one morning. We left some washing out when out trying to find a bike tyre and it was taken in when it started raining. I loved my camping experience here. If only the flies would leave this site but they were there because the local farmer had been muck spreading.
The walks are within most peoples ability.
Friendly and helpful staff.Lovely location. Barnard Castle a lovely spot to explore, Town has a good range of shops and the antique centres are a delight to wander around. Walks by the river are very pleasant. Castle and Bowes museum well worth a visit.handy for motor racing fans as Croft is within easy travelling distance. Will visit again as there is still plenty more to explore.
SUITABLE FOR: Older couples,Peaceful break,Younger couples
first time @ this excellent clean & well kept site & with friendly staff, good walking straight from site to Barnard castle & also many other footpaths around to discover, we will be back @ a later date, thanks from Mick & June
A well kept quiet and friendly site in a lovely location with easy road and walking access to Barnard Castle. Holiday Site Managers Angie and Paul very friendly and helpful, with Angie's thought of the day always something to look forward to. We had a wonderful week ~ thank you.
narrow lane to get in but ok for our small van; friendly welcome; small; flat campsite so ideal for first couple of times out when getting used to setting up; would recommend 'recycling' bin at each bin site rather than having to take empties behind reception; Barnard Castle's beautiful golf course was challenging (i found every curve of water!); the antique shops were great to explore. we had a lovely weekend. a beautiful area to visit.
paul and angie very helpfull.asked to change our pitch as we didnt like being under tree . nothing was any trouble for them . great people , will go back later in year .
ON OUR FIRST VISIT TO THIS SITE WE STOPPED FOR ONE NIGHT ENDED UP STAYING SEVEN,THE SITE IS LEVEL ,VERY CLEAN AND TOILETS SUPERB, WE CANNOT PRAISE ANGIE AND PAUL ENOUGH FOR THEIR FREINDLY AND HELPFUL ATTITUDE, THEY ARE A CREDIT TO OUR CLUB, KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK.
This was our first camping holiday as a family with our 2 children (ages 7 & 3) and we couldn't have had a better time (well apart from the weather but unfortunately the campsite doesn't control that!). We had a lovely welcome and Angie and Paul were very helpful throughout our stay. The campsite was immaculate, the facilities spotless and the playground great for the children. Also a lovely walk (approximately 30mins)from the site into Barny through the farm next door and the woods along the river. I would recommend this site to anyone and it is a great first place to go if you are unsure about camping. It rained alot while we were there but we enjoyed it so much - even in the rain - that we have now joined the Camping and Caravan club! Thanks Angie and Paul we will be back!
very nice site would recommend
First time camping for my family and couldn't have asked for more. Angus and Paul on site are extremely friendly and helpful. Toilet block fantastic and whole site dog friendly too. We will def be returning thanks
This site is in a great location within easy walking distance of the town. Lots to see & do in local area. The facilities were the cleanest I have ever seen - despite lots of rain & busy bank holiday weekend there was no mud inside. My 15 month old enjoyed the swings and the sheep & lambs in field next to the site!
I would highly recommend this site to all.
An excellent site with wardens Angie & Paul going the 'extra mile' in trying conditions with the high winds and apparently without support, hopefully temporary for their sake. Once sited we felt really relaxed, pitches were spacious and level. Facilities were immaculate. Easy walk to town from the site, and plenty of pubs/cafes there. The little 'library shelf' was a boon as I had finished the book I bought. A trip to High and Low Force Waterfalls is a must, we were lucky to see after rain in full flow! We hope we can visit this site again before too long.
hi have just returned from a five day break at this lovely and well presented site which we both enjoyed except for the strong winds which lasted a couple of days but never the less the warm and friendly site managers angie paul along with the many places to visit will ensure a return in the near future.
This site is beautifully kept in a lovely situation. Birdsong is the only sound likely to disturb the p&q. A pretty walk leads to Barnard Castle, which is the perfect small town, and there are good bus services to enable one-way walks further afield.

My husband & I only recently joined the club and have stayed at 5 club sites. The enthusiastic welcome we recieved from the wardens and assistants at Barnard Castle exceeded anything we have known in over 40 years of caravanning. The site is beautifully maintained and spotlesly clean. We loved the thoughts for the day. We will be back. Thank-you

This was our first visit to this area and we were delighted we chose this site. The welcome from Angie & Paul was exceptionally friendly and felt they were welcoming back "old friends". Within ten minutes of arriving we were set up on our pitch. Paul took us to our pitch and explained about the facilities. Angie's "thought for the day" always raised a smile. The shower and toilet facilities were spotless as was the laundry area. Would thoroughly recommend this site and don't think the comments from "Smokingman" pertained to this site. We would definitely return to Barney as its a great base for visiting the surrounding areas. Keep up the good work Angie & Paul!!!!
Just spent a smashing couple of nights here and have to say that the service from the managers was brilliant. Nothing was too much trouble for them. Quick and easy check-in and was able to choose a nice pitch at the end of the field. The on site facilities were first class. Best loos and pot washing room we've seen. We will be back.....sooner rather than later. Well done. Smashing site!!!
Made to feel very unwelcome when my partner and i arrived, had to wait in excess of 45min to be told if we could pitch a small two man tent. Camping area was small and at the end of the field then they wanted to charge £22 for the privelage. Can't comment on the facilities we did not stay. If this is typical of CCC sites we will not join!!!
SUITABLE FOR: Older couples
Barney is one of our favourite sites, near the lovely little market town of Barnard Castle. We've been there several times and are going again at the end of this month. The area is beautiful, with lots to do in the area and Co Durham as a whole - physical activities, sight seeing, Roman remains, railway heritage. The site is not too big, and the toilet block is immaculate, but can be hard pressed at peak times, like so many sites. Reception sells basic supplies, but there is a supermarket in Barney itself.
DATE STAYED: May 2010
first time visit to Barnard Castle C.C.C.S. and was really pleased with everything. firstly the wardens could not have been more helpful and friendly, we had the choice of pitches shown to use by the warden. All amenities are spotless as stated in all reviews. The area is lovely for walks or just relaxing. Barnard Castle itself was realy nice with good places to eat and drink.
We will certainly be visiting again.
This was only my second trip out and my first at a formal campsite. Oh wow hasn't 'Barney' set the standard high!
The site is immaculately clean, the toilets/showers/laundry/dishwashing/chemical disposal/reception areas were spotless and of a really high standard.
Nice level site, well laid out with good sized pitches. Water and rubbish points were well lit and clean and tidy. Nice dog walk around the perimeter of the site. Didn't get further afield due the heavy rain but know the area fairly well anyway and there are some lovely places to visit nearby. The wardens were really friendly and helpful. I notice some other reviewers have marked down on the facilities, but it suited me down to the ground as a solo camper who just wanted to get away from the daily grind. Fish and chip van calls on a Saturday night too.
The dawn chorus was stunning, and the crows kept chattering all day, trying to outdo the sheep! Will definitely return.
We have just returned from another great weekend on this site. Although a busy bank holiday weekend and a full site the facilities were always clean and no queues for the showers/washbasins. The site was lovely and peaceful on an evening too.
There are some great walks straight from this site - down into Barnard Castle along the pretty deepdale beck, or across the fields to the railway walk and teesdale way up to Cotherstone and beyond. A great place for a weekend or week away and very friendly site staff.
First visit to area.Warm welcome from site assistants John And Sue,two of the nicest, most helpful CC Club staff we have met.Great site for relaxation or exploring area.We hope to return in th future
DATE STAYED: April 2011
An excellent site with brilliant managers and assistants who were very welcoming and helpful. The site is a 30 minute walk from the town and there is a brilliant walk through the next farm and woods - directions printed out in the office.
we arrived on good friday for a 3 night stay. and was made to feel very welcome by 4 really freindly & helpfull stewards.nothing was too much trouble for them.the site was very clean & well maintained & shower block/toilets & washing up area absolutely spotless !the site was surrounded by beautiful scenery(a walkers paradise)already we wished we were staying longer.this was the first time we'd visited this area & this campsite & we'll definately be back again !sooner rather than later.thankyou, paul, angi, john &sue for a great weekend on your campsite, sorry we missed you to say goodbye, best wishes chris & dave tomlinson(the couple who forgot the tent poles ha ha)x
Very warm welcome from the wardens and I and was offered a choice of pithces on arrival.
It rained heavily whilst we were there but the toilet/shower blocks were kept immaculate.
The indoor, heated pot washing area was very welcome.
I can highly recommend the fish and chip van that comes on a Wednesday evening and the Chinese take away that delivers to the site.
Childrens play area is a little basic but is fine for younger children and is centrally located.
We will definately be returning.
DATE STAYED: August 2010
had a lovely holiday site was great staff very frendly and helpfull will be back
A lovely site for our first trip; green and attractive. We
asked for a quiet pitch and were given one at the far end of the site. Still in easy reach of the showers etc.
Good dog walk and a pleasant woodland walk into Barnard Castle taking about 30 mins. Couldn't have used this easily at night though.
Only drawback was no hostelry in walking distance.
Would return to try more of the walking in the area.
SUITABLE FOR: Families,Older couples,Younger couples
great peaceful site staff are very friendly and helpful with nipping clean facilitys great for a relaxing break and not to far if you wanted to walk in to barney great few days thanks
Visited the site on 1st April 2011,staff at reception were so friendly. Was led to our pitch by the nice guy on the push bike.Pitch was excellent, and again visited by 2nd member of staff who was concerned about the gale force winds and made sure we were happy with pitch. All we can say is my wife and i found these facilities to be the best we have visited and we are going back 1 week later, for another brill weekend.Really recommend this site to be one of the best.
we've been all over the country and Barney is one of the best sites around, can't fault the staff, brilliant atmosphere, great for everyone to enjoy, facilities are superb, site easy to get to, only down fall is Barney's shops shut on bank holiday week-ends, fish & chips worth waiting for on site Wednesday night, its got to be the most well maintained site ever, we have booked to go back for 10 days soon.
Being first time campers, what a joy to have found this 5 star camp site an introduction never to be forgotten, warm friendly staff nothing was too much trouble.
Town is brilliant for sightseeing, shopping, or just relaxing. Having been introduced to a fantastic Chinese Delivery Service, there was no need to cook. Returned to this site on more than 3 occasions and was greeted with familiarity and warmth.
Facilities are a big WOW, can't wait for nice weather in 2011 to return. Can definitely recommend to old and new campers.
DATE STAYED: July 2010
Lovely site within walking distance of Barnard Castle. Countryside walks nearby. Facilities modern and clean. Thoroughly recommended.
A lovely clean site, well maintained. Nice walks from the site.
Good location for walking and cycling. Bowes museum and the castle worth a visit.
Childrens play area is in the middle of the site and can be very noisy. This did spoil my stay. Constant use of the lawn mower to direct arrivals and cut grass at the same time, became quite annoying.
Useful information leaflet provided, but the 'rules' are written in a fairly condecening way.
Town of Barnard Castle,in a pleasant walk away with a large supermarket, shops and pubs although the town does seem to be suffering from the effects of the recession.
SUITABLE FOR: Families,Groups,Active break
Very well kept site, lots of room around your pitch.
Very friendly and helpful staff who will give you lots of local information on what to do and where to go, surrounding areas have something for everyone. will definatley return!
Lovely site friendly and clean!! Not easy walking distance (with young ones) to pubs etc. But if you are just planning to stay onsite couldn't fault it!
It is quite windy as seams to sit on a slight hill but a nice site none the less!
