Wow what a fantastic site! Immaculately presented and the facilities were of a very high standard.Lovely hot showers that were very welcome as it had been snowing!!
Our party was made up of 3 families and we were kindly located together which was great. The owners were extremely friendly and helpful.
Plenty to do in the area, we visited High Force, Fountains Abbey and Barnard Castle itself. The fish and chip van on Saturday night exceeded expectations.
No complaints at all and will definitely be back!

Returned to this lovely site again with friends, got pitched together near the small play park and toilets which was fine, wardens told the older children they could play ball games up the top of the site while the site was quite. Very clean lovely site nothing was a problem for the wardens when we asked about things to do in the local area. Toilets always clean even when there was snow in April. There is a chip van that visits the site twice a week which was well worth the money and food was great .a must to go to is diggerland in Durham all kids aged 5-48 loved it. Beamish the living museum of the north is also another great thing to do/see.
We will be back to this site!!

Spent eleven nights on site and everything was excellent, apart from the weather maybe!
Paul and Angie were superb. We were advised about the most sheltered pitches available because it was blowing a gale when we arrived.
The swallow which greeted us on arrival must have set off for Africa that evening because we never saw it again. Lots more birds on and around the site to see and hear.
Loads of places to visit within reasonable driving distance. High Foce and Low Force very impressive after rain. A bit further afield a trip to Smardale Gill near Kirkby Stephen was definitely worthwhile for the red squirrel sighting. Bowes Museum should not be missed.
Loved Angie's blackboard with her thought of the day.
Chippy van excellent.
We'd love to come back for another visit.

all within an hours travel. Also went to Farmers market and Bowes Show

We very much enjoyed our stay at Barnard Castle Site. It was extremely friendly and we were greeted warmly and shown all the facilities which were available. We were also very pleased and grateful for the help we were given when we had a problem with the gas. This is a site which we would recommend to anyone and we will be making a return visit ourselves.

A very well kept site in a secluded location. The toilet/shower block was superb. The shop was a bit threadbare on stock but useful nonetheless. The nearby town was a textbook view into middle England with its quaint little shops and eateries. Only stayed one night in the end due to unforseen circumstances which was a shame but gave me reason to return.

What a fantastic stay we had here. Angie, Paul and the team do their very best to accomodate, so friendly and helpful. We celebrated a 40th birthday and wedding anniversary here, so must recommend the Fox & Hounds in Cotherstone too for excellent food. Loads to see & do here, a short drive to High Force for great walks, Hamsterley forest for cycling, we even visited the Tan Hill Inn (Britains highest pub)and Angel of the North (which is about an hour's drive away) Even though the weather was very windy and wet at times (which drained really quickly from the pitches)the hot powerful clean showers and facilities were tip top!TV signal is great too usuing just our status aerial. Thanks again team for a wonderful stay!

Loved this site. Quiet and peaceful and yet it was full. The picture in brochure doesn't do it justice as it looks open. The pitches are in cul de sacs and little areas making you feel that you have your own little corner.
Kind and warm welcome. Nice views from pitch. Dog walk brilliant being along a public footpath. Great for kids too as nice little play area and for the little one who loves horses and ponies there are lots to look at. I dreaded the walk through the fields to the woodland and Barnard Castle because of the horses and how the dogs would react but the horses are in fields either side of the path so no worries for horses, dogs or people as they don't get together.
Altogether an excellent site in lovely area. Relaxing break and will be back time and time again to explore the lovely are surrounding it.

We have just enjoyed 7 wonderful days here and found it to be a most excellent site. Paul & Angie and their staff gave us a very warm greeting and were most helpful throughout our stay, which I have to say included gale force winds and heavy rain! However, the weather did not deter from our enjoyment at all and we were pleased to find so much to do in the area. Barnard Castle is a very pleasant town with full amenities (the chip shop does amazing fish bites) and we enjoyed excursions out to Raby Castle, High Force at Middleton-in-Teesdale and even got further afield to Durham, Beamish & Ormsby Hall. Was somewhat disappointed that Bowes Museum charges extra for photography in addition to the entrance fee but still happy to support the local places of interest.
The site itself is kept in pristine condition and the shower block is spotless with steaming hot water The pressure in the showers could be just a tad more powerful but that is merely personal preference.
We would be happy to recommend this site to others and shall certainly have a return visit in the future :)

At the start of a long tour, this was the best introduction. A suberb welcome by helpful and enthusiastic staff and lots of information about local amenities. Buses a 10 minute walk from the site every hour into Barnard Castle or a 35 minute woodland walk is a good dry weather alternative. The site was hit with gale force winds seriously affecting caravan awnings with the owners absent. The Warden team spent a long time going round the site re- securing awnings and making all safe. Normal facilites kept in excellent condition but the best recommendation is that the Staff are quite superb. I wish that all the sites could reach this standard. The Bowes Museum should not be missed.

What a fab find, once we,d driven past the caravan club site. to find camping club site, No problems though. We were offered a great pitch away from the play area which suited us , I must say we like being offered a choice when we arrive at club sites. We walked into town through the woods which was lovely .but it would be too far to walk back after a pub visit.Morrisons supermarket is in the town centre, Ideal for cooked chicken and bread. We went to Burrells fish and chip shop for tea twice it was so good (they open sundays too)and you can sit in. Did a days walk from High force. good pub near end of walk Strathmore arms i think. This site is also very well set out and organised, plenty of space and the managers seem to know just what we wanted. well done thankyou we will come again

I have been to many club sites but have never been motivated to comment, however I felt the need with Barnard Castle. The site is beautiful. Away from the town but only a lovely, short walk in. The facilities, which are the best I have seen, were vast and spotless and no wonder, as I saw one of the guys sweeping and mopping the gents after 23:00!
Barnard Castle is a town that I did not know but will return to. A bustling market town (the farmers market was on whilst we were there), it has lots of great local shops.
We took the opportunity to visit High Force which was spectacular and well worth the 12 or so mile drive.
All in all, a weekend did not do the site justice and we will definitely be back!

Our third visit to this site. Paul and Angi were the new managers for both of our visits this year. They are a genuinely warm and friendly couple who did everything they could to ensure that we we were happy with our pitch. The facilities were excellent and the campsite itself was very clean and well maintained. They have introduced a morning newspaper service and twice weekly visits from a fish and chip van which are very popular. Our 9 year old son loves this site because he can ride his bike around a nice circuit and although the play area is small it is a good meeting place for the campsite children. There is never any noise after 10. Overall I think this site is great value for money - a firm favourite with the whole family.

We are tenters and are not members of the club. However, if all the other club sites are as good as Barney then we will be joining.
We only wanted to test the tent out as we are first timers and the help and assistance we received from Paul was brilliant - he obviously knows his tent poles!
Angie in the office was very helpful and knowledgeable of the area.

As a camper situated near to the previous reviewer "not very happy camper" I would like to comment on how well the situation was handled by the Managers of the site.
If non member groups do not adhere to the Camping & Caravan Club rules then maybe they should find alternative camp sites.
Barney is a well run site, the facilities are second to none and we were not disappointed.
We will definately be back soon and thank the Managers again for a brilliant weekend.

Not a happy camper said...
From start to finish this was a disappointment. Upon arrival we were presented with the rules and regulations of the site which reflected more of a concentration camp than a caravan/camping site.
Total silence is expected to be maintained from 11pm onwards and heaven forbid if you do not want to go to sleep instantly. As a group of young (late 20's), experienced campers, we were made to feel like children from staff and management alike.
All in all, a disgusting experience making a mockery of campers and camping.

WOW ! This site was recommended to us and we weren't disappointed. Honestly cannot think of anything negative to say. The welcome was great and the toilets, washing up facilties and laudrey were spotless and in perfect working order at all times of the day. Individual washing cubicles provide privacy with extra touches such as additional lighting above the mirrors/wash basins and in the shower cubicles. Also washing lines very useful and thoughtful. A small playground and plenty of space to ride bikes kept our children entertained all weekend, leaving the adults time to relax! We will be back very soon. Thank you

We have never left a review on any site previously visited but felt we must on this occasion. What can we say? Fantastic site, fantastic managers/wardens on site and such a peaceful place to stay. Even though we had made an error in booking the pitch (booked a non electric when we thought it was with electric) nothing was too much trouble for Angie & Paul who accommodated us on a 'pitch' with electric hook-up. The toilet block and facilities are spotless as is the site. The fish and chip van on the Saturday was a treat too! Barnard Castle close by and well worth a visit so too is High Force Waterfall near Middleton-in-Teesdale. We enjoyed our stay so much we have booked a further stay next month, the correct pitch this time of course!

We were staying here as part of the W2W cycle route. The couple running the site could not have been more helpful. They even stored our dairy as we stayed when it was really hot. The facitlites were spotless. We even had the entertainment of the sheep being rounded up one morning. We left some washing out when out trying to find a bike tyre and it was taken in when it started raining. I loved my camping experience here. The facilities were the cleanest I have ever seen - despite lots of rain & busy bank holiday weekend there was no mud inside. My 15 month old enjoyed the swings and the sheep & lambs in field next to the site!
I would highly recommend this site to all.

An excellent site with wardens Angie & Paul going the 'extra mile' in trying conditions with the high winds and apparently without support, hopefully temporary for their sake. Once sited we felt really relaxed, pitches were spacious and level. Facilities were immaculate. Easy walk to town from the site, and plenty of pubs/cafes there. The little 'library shelf' was a boon as I had finished the book I bought. A trip to High and Low Force Waterfalls is a must, we were lucky to see after rain in full flow! We hope we can visit this site again before too long.

hi have just returned from a five day break at this lovely and well presented site which we both enjoyed except for the strong winds which lasted a couple of days but never the less the warm and friendly site managers angie paul along with the many places to visit will ensure a return in the near future.

This site is beautifully kept in a lovely situation. Birdsong is the only sound likely to disturb the p&q. A pretty walk leads to Barnard Castle, which is the perfect small town, and there are good bus services to enable one-way walks further afield.

My husband & I only recently joined the club and have stayed at 5 club sites. The enthusiastic welcome we recieved from the wardens and assistants at Barnard Castle exceeded anything we have known in over 40 years of caravanning. The site is beautifully maintained and spotlesly clean. We loved the thoughts for the day. We will be back. Thank-you

This was our first visit to this area and we were delighted we chose this site. The welcome from Angie & Paul was exceptionally friendly and felt they were welcoming back "old friends". Within ten minutes of arriving we were set up on our pitch. Paul took us to our pitch and explained about the facilities. Angie's "thought for the day" always raised a smile. The shower and toilet facilities were spotless as was the laundry area. Would thoroughly recommend this site and don't think the comments from "Smokingman" pertained to this site. We would definitely return to Barney as its a great base for visiting the surrounding areas. Keep up the good work Angie & Paul!!!!

Just spent a smashing couple of nights here and have to say that the service from the managers was brilliant. Nothing was too much trouble for them. Quick and easy check-in and was able to choose a nice pitch at the end of the field. The on site facilities were first class. Best loos and pot washing room we've seen. We will be back.....sooner rather than later. Well done. Smashing site!!!

Made to feel very unwelcome when my partner and i arrived, had to wait in excess of 45min to be told if we could pitch a small two man tent. Camping area was small and at the end of the field then they wanted to charge £22 for the privelage. Can't comment on the facilities we did not stay. If this is typical of CCC sites we will not join!!!

Barney is one of our favourite sites, near the lovely little market town of Barnard Castle. We've been there several times and are going again at the end of this month. The area is beautiful, with lots to do in the area and Co Durham as a whole - physical activities, sight seeing, Roman remains, railway heritage. The site is not too big, and the toilet block is immaculate, but can be hard pressed at peak times, like so many sites. Reception sells basic supplies, but there is a supermarket in Barney itself.

first time visit to Barnard Castle C.C.C.S. and was really pleased with everything. firstly the wardens could not have been more helpful and friendly, we had the choice of pitches shown to use by the warden. All amenities are spotless as stated in all reviews. The area is lovely for walks or just relaxing. Barnard Castle itself was realy nice with good places to eat and drink.
We will certainly be visiting again.

This was only my second trip out and my first at a formal campsite. Oh wow hasn't 'Barney' set the standard high!
The site is immaculately clean, the toilets/showers/laundry/dishwashing/chemical disposal/reception areas were spotless and of a really high standard.
Nice level site, well laid out with good sized pitches. Water and rubbish points were well lit and clean and tidy. Nice dog walk around the perimeter of the site. Didn't get further afield due the heavy rain but know the area fairly well anyway and there are some lovely places to visit nearby. The wardens were really friendly and helpful. I notice some other reviewers have marked down on the facilities, but it suited me down to the ground as a solo camper who just wanted to get away from the daily grind. Fish and chip van calls on a Saturday night too.
The dawn chorus was stunning, and the crows kept chattering all day, trying to outdo the sheep! Will definitely return.

We have just returned from another great weekend on this site. Although a busy bank holiday weekend and a full site the facilities were always clean and no queues for the showers/washbasins. The site was lovely and peaceful on an evening too.
There are some great walks straight from this site - down into Barnard Castle along the pretty deepdale beck, or across the fields to the railway walk and teesdale way up to Cotherstone and beyond. A great place for a weekend or week away and very friendly site staff.

Very warm welcome from the wardens and I and was offered a choice of pithces on arrival.
It rained heavily whilst we were there but the toilet/shower blocks were kept immaculate.
The indoor, heated pot washing area was very welcome.
I can highly recommend the fish and chip van that comes on a Wednesday evening and the Chinese take away that delivers to the site.
Childrens play area is a little basic but is fine for younger children and is centrally located.
We will definately be returning.

A lovely site for our first trip; green and attractive. We
asked for a quiet pitch and were given one at the far end of the site. Still in easy reach of the showers etc.
Good dog walk and a pleasant woodland walk into Barnard Castle taking about 30 mins. Couldn't have used this easily at night though.
Only drawback was no hostelry in walking distance.
Would return to try more of the walking in the area.

Being first time campers, what a joy to have found this 5 star camp site an introduction never to be forgotten, warm friendly staff nothing was too much trouble.
Town is brilliant for sightseeing, shopping, or just relaxing. Having been introduced to a fantastic Chinese Delivery Service, there was no need to cook. Returned to this site on more than 3 occasions and was greeted with familiarity and warmth.
Facilities are a big WOW, can't wait for nice weather in 2011 to return. Can definitely recommend to old and new campers.

Good location for walking and cycling. Bowes museum and the castle worth a visit.
Spotless facilities.
Childrens play area is in the middle of the site and can be very noisy. This did spoil my stay. Constant use of the lawn mower to direct arrivals and cut grass at the same time, became quite annoying.
Useful information leaflet provided, but the 'rules' are written in a fairly condecening way.
Town of Barnard Castle,in a pleasant walk away with a large supermarket, shops and pubs although the town does seem to be suffering from the effects of the recession.
