We had just rejoined the Club after a break from camping and used this site to practise with our newly acquired caravan.(had previously camped with tents ant trailer tents). The staff were very friendly and helpful and the facilities wonderful, including an excellent dog walking area. The walk into Barnard Castle is lovely (once you find the right path !) and you can then do lots of walks in the woodland by the River Tees.

We were warmly welcomed by the staff who seemed very happy to book us in and show us to our pitch in the dark. The person who showed us our pitch helped unhook and position our caravan.
The facilities were spotless and it was obvious that they were well cared for.
It was a great site and although a little remote, it is a good half hours walk to the town, it was a great place to stay.
Even on the last day, 5 November, when the site was closing all the staff were helpful and friendly.

We decided to opt for a visit to Barnard Castle Camping and Caravanning Club Site.
On arrival to this relatively secluded site, we were met in the reception area by the wardens who presented as being friendly, polite and very helpful.
After being booked-in, we were shown to out tent pitch which was level and thankfully very well drained, as the constant, and sometimes torrential rain, lasted non-stop for the next 3 days.
The site itself is well maintained, with the toilets, showers and dish washing facilities all being very clean, with plenty of hot water on demand.
At the reception area, there are a selection of information leaflets about days out, local attractions and an OS map of the area, etc. The reception also doubles as a shop selling some basic food essentials and ice-cream, etc. A book exchange is also available, which actually costs money to exchange a book (Okay, it’s only 50p but if you are swapping a book surely this should be free!).
There is a fish & chip van that visits the campsite on a Wednesday evening for a couple of hours and the fish and chips are very tasty and are reasonably priced. Unfortunately, during our trip, we ran out of camping gas for our stove and despite the campsite being a gas cylinder stockist, we were advised that they only stock the gas bottle that we required in the summer months and tended only to keep a stock of the larger gas canisters used by … yes, you guessed it, by people in caravans. Anyway a trip into a gas stockist called Richardson’s of Barnard Castle, fixed this issue, but, again in our opinion, yet another example of the C&CC favouring caravans over campers in tents.
In summary, we would still recommend this campsite due to the friendliness of staff and its general location; as it makes a good base for exploring Teesdale and the Yorkshire Dales National Park, as well as being a haven for walkers like us.
Happy Camping!

We were extremely impressed with this site. The welcome was very friendly, cheerful and helpful. The toilets and other facilities were immaculate. We particularly liked the dog walks and quietness of the site.
We WILL be back and WILL recommend it to lots of people.
I would give one little tip: check the way you get there, we are local so knew to come from a certain point down the A66, if you go at it from the town centre you have to cross a small (ish) bridge. The bridge is ok for a lot of caravans but we would have found it difficult with out twin axel van
.

Just returned from 3 nights at the site and felt compelled to say how great the whole stay was. Were new to CCC and this site and the wardens are a credit to the club.
So very clean and the pitches are spacious and well laid out.
Only problem now is trying to find when we can return!
The site is surrounded by fantastic countryside and views and so easy to walk into Barny we didnt use the car from arriving.

This site is located approximately 1.5 miles from the town of Barnard Castle and is in easy walking distance through the woods. The site is kept in pristine condition by the hard work of the wardens who are all very friendly and helpful. The site has a small playground comprising of a couple of swings and a climbing framework which leads to a slide. Reception has a small shop selling basic supplies, more shopping is available in Barnard Castle. Toilet and shower blocks were immaculate and had plenty of cubicles available. The hard standing pitch that we were on was only just adequate for the size of my van, as we were only using a 390 porch awning we were able to "just" fit the car down the side of the van, if we had used the full awning we could not have got the car onto the pitch because the car would not fit across the front of the van as was requested. The grass area next to the pitches should be used for vehicle parking, campers opposite us were driving cars off and on to the grass, appears to be a silly rule and should be abolished. A lovely site and we will definately be returning, just need to sort out the pitches.

I have always enjoyed this site in the past and have given it 5 stars as the wardens were very friendly and the grass was beautifully kept but I do feel that this year there were a few things that need addressing. Facilities used to be excellent but this year some of the toilets and wash cubicals were kept locked and as there were a lot of children on the site I gave up using them after 2 days as there were no cleaning cloths in the wash cubicals to clean them up before or after use. I also object to having to park the towcar across the front of the caravan obstructing the view when there's plenty of room at the side, no one wants to sit and look at the side of their car all day. It also made the site look very untidy. Then to make matters much worse a very large family with a very small tent and using the car for some of them to sleep in were pitched right in front of us and 4 other caravans when all of the none electric pitches at the bottom of the field were empty. The children didn't bother us and played around their own pitch or in the play area but the noise from them went on well into the night, and the adults would sit in the car with the doors open and loud music playing. We had intended to extend our stay for another 2 nights as we were enjoying the area and the company of friends but decided against it.

This is the first site we have been to in over 40 years of camping where the reception was closed when we arrived just after 12 noon. After 15 minutes we were checked in and given a pitch next to a noisy agricultural farm road. We tried to look in the shop but it was closed as were the toilet blocks. Our stay was hampered by peoples rush every day to use the toilet/ shower blocks before they closed at an inapropiate time and for far to long. Then on our last day I went to empty the elsan toilet before setting off home at 11am only to find the room with the facility to empty the Elsan was locked. When I spoke to the gentleman cleaner he told me it was out of order and that he had no solution to the problem, I asked if I could empty the liquid contents down a toilet and was told a definate no as were four other people who had elsans to empty. We repeatedly asked what we should do but were told it wasnt his problem. For a site of this size to only have one elsan disposal point is disapointing in this day and age.I suspect this is a normal occurance on this site as the notice that the facility was out of order was neatly typed out on a computer and pinned to the door.I had to return my full cassette to the caravan and bring it home to empty it, not like others who simply emptied theirs on the grass behind the toilet block. This whole experience spoilt what should have been a memorable stay with your club so I will not be staying at that site again

We were looking forward to a well deserved break. Our two children and us had booked to go for a weekend break in a dog friendly campsite close to home. The deposit of £25 was paid and we were raring to go. 4 days before our trip, our daughter became ill. When we spoke to campsite, they refusaed to let us change our booking to the following weekend. Even though we were happy for the deposit not to be returned, we wanted them to transfer this to the next booking. We were amazed to be treated like we were doing something wrong, being told that we would lose our deposit and if we wanted to book for the following weekend, another deposit was payable. I hasten to add, we did not reschedule our stay. My family and I like going camping and, althougbh we understand business' have their regulations, it is free to be courteous to your customers and you will be surprised at how many more campers you will get if you remember this. Unfortunately, I do not recommend this site.

Nice site, good location for sight seeing, we had been touring Scotland for 5 weeks and this was our final stopping place on the way home. Unfortunately this was the only club site where half the Toilet/Washhand Cubicles were locked off to save cleaning. This was the only site where I actually queued for a toilet and or washbasin as there were only three of each available.

This is our first time at a C&C site. We've bought a caravan this year and with our six month old daughter we are getting away whenever we can. We are members of that other club too and as funds aren't unlimited, only one will be renewed at the end of the year.
I had to reschedule our stay at the last minute - move it forward by a day due to work commitments which was done without issue. I appreciate that this isn't the norm but then, neither was the work situation. It's was either keep my deposit or reschedule and have the full fee and business sense prevailed.
On arrival at the site, the welcome was great. Very friendly. Just one suggestion - put the answerphone in another room (or play it prior to the busiest time of the day).Tryiing to listen and speak whilst that is playing isn't at all helpful.
It was nice being taken to and guided into the pitch - a very nice touch and made things much easier.
The site is immaculate. Even with the rain pouring down, its clear to see that there is a lot of pride in keeping the place tidy. Showers and facilities are kept clean too. Showering at 8pm, the block was still in good order and the weather hasn't let up once.
We paid a £5 deposit for the 'baby room' key and this is good with a M&P baby bath and some really nice *handpainted* decorations in there that look the part. Basic, but spotless.
Certainly a place I would visit again. Certainly would recommend to friends.

Having just returned from this site two days early because of the terrible weather, I felt I needed to balance all the reviews that wax lyrical about the place.
Yes it's toilet blocks were warm and clean, but not the gent's, in the afternoon when it rained and children are using it as a playground! The feel of the site wasn't right for us, it's a bit too far out of Barnard Castle to walk, and I find the area a little boring. The booking in took for ever, trying to sell raffle tickets and the like for the Jubilee rather than concentrating on the important things.
My main complaint is the state of the roads which are dirt but with large potholes which makes visiting the toilet block like an obstacle course, with water features.
Will not visit that site again, sorry!

Returned to this lovely site again with friends, got pitched together near the small play park and toilets which was fine, wardens told the older children they could play ball games up the top of the site while the site was quite. Very clean lovely site nothing was a problem for the wardens when we asked about things to do in the local area. Toilets always clean even when there was snow in April. There is a chip van that visits the site twice a week which was well worth the money and food was great .a must to go to is diggerland in Durham all kids aged 5-48 loved it. Beamish the living museum of the north is also another great thing to do/see.

Spent eleven nights on site and everything was excellent, apart from the weather maybe!
Paul and Angie were superb. We were advised about the most sheltered pitches available because it was blowing a gale when we arrived.
The swallow which greeted us on arrival must have set off for Africa that evening because we never saw it again. Lots more birds on and around the site to see and hear.
Loads of places to visit within reasonable driving distance. High Foce and Low Force very impressive after rain. A bit further afield a trip to Smardale Gill near Kirkby Stephen was definitely worthwhile for the red squirrel sighting. Bowes Museum should not be missed.
Loved Angie's blackboard with her thought of the day.
Chippy van excellent.

Loved this site. Quiet and peaceful and yet it was full. The picture in brochure doesn't do it justice as it looks open. The pitches are in cul de sacs and little areas making you feel that you have your own little corner.
Kind and warm welcome. Nice views from pitch. Dog walk brilliant being along a public footpath. Great for kids too as nice little play area and for the little one who loves horses and ponies there are lots to look at. I dreaded the walk through the fields to the woodland and Barnard Castle because of the horses and how the dogs would react but the horses are in fields either side of the path so no worries for horses, dogs or people as they don't get together.
Altogether an excellent site in lovely area. Relaxing break and will be back time and time again to explore the lovely are surrounding it.

We have just enjoyed 7 wonderful days here and found it to be a most excellent site. Paul & Angie and their staff gave us a very warm greeting and were most helpful throughout our stay, which I have to say included gale force winds and heavy rain! However, the weather did not deter from our enjoyment at all and we were pleased to find so much to do in the area. Barnard Castle is a very pleasant town with full amenities (the chip shop does amazing fish bites) and we enjoyed excursions out to Raby Castle, High Force at Middleton-in-Teesdale and even got further afield to Durham, Beamish & Ormsby Hall. Was somewhat disappointed that Bowes Museum charges extra for photography in addition to the entrance fee but still happy to support the local places of interest.
The site itself is kept in pristine condition and the shower block is spotless with steaming hot water The pressure in the showers could be just a tad more powerful but that is merely personal preference.
We would be happy to recommend this site to others and shall certainly have a return visit in the future :)

At the start of a long tour, this was the best introduction. A suberb welcome by helpful and enthusiastic staff and lots of information about local amenities. Buses a 10 minute walk from the site every hour into Barnard Castle or a 35 minute woodland walk is a good dry weather alternative. The site was hit with gale force winds seriously affecting caravan awnings with the owners absent. The Warden team spent a long time going round the site re- securing awnings and making all safe. Normal facilites kept in excellent condition but the best recommendation is that the Staff are quite superb. I wish that all the sites could reach this standard. The Bowes Museum should not be missed.

What a fab find, once we,d driven past the caravan club site. to find camping club site, No problems though. We were offered a great pitch away from the play area which suited us , I must say we like being offered a choice when we arrive at club sites. We walked into town through the woods which was lovely .but it would be too far to walk back after a pub visit.Morrisons supermarket is in the town centre, Ideal for cooked chicken and bread. We went to Burrells fish and chip shop for tea twice it was so good (they open sundays too)and you can sit in. Did a days walk from High force. good pub near end of walk Strathmore arms i think. Site well maintained, especially greass pitches (even during some very wet weather!!) Riding stable next door was very good, even for novice riders. Loads to do in area (cycling / walking) Bowes Museum a must!!! Very quiet site, especially no road noise. Will hopefully be back next summer.

I have been to many club sites but have never been motivated to comment, however I felt the need with Barnard Castle. The site is beautiful. Away from the town but only a lovely, short walk in. The facilities, which are the best I have seen, were vast and spotless and no wonder, as I saw one of the guys sweeping and mopping the gents after 23:00!
Barnard Castle is a town that I did not know but will return to. A bustling market town (the farmers market was on whilst we were there), it has lots of great local shops.
We took the opportunity to visit High Force which was spectacular and well worth the 12 or so mile drive.
All in all, a weekend did not do the site justice and we will definitely be back!

Our third visit to this site. Paul and Angi were the new managers for both of our visits this year. They are a genuinely warm and friendly couple who did everything they could to ensure that we we were happy with our pitch. The facilities were excellent and the campsite itself was very clean and well maintained. They have introduced a morning newspaper service and twice weekly visits from a fish and chip van which are very popular. Our 9 year old son loves this site because he can ride his bike around a nice circuit and although the play area is small it is a good meeting place for the campsite children. There is never any noise after 10. Overall I think this site is great value for money - a firm favourite with the whole family.

We are tenters and are not members of the club. However, if all the other club sites are as good as Barney then we will be joining.
We only wanted to test the tent out as we are first timers and the help and assistance we received from Paul was brilliant - he obviously knows his tent poles!
Angie in the office was very helpful and knowledgeable of the area.
The site is wonderfully kept and when we return we will join thanks to this little gem of a site.

As a camper situated near to the previous reviewer "not very happy camper" I would like to comment on how well the situation was handled by the Managers of the site.
If non member groups do not adhere to the Camping & Caravan Club rules then maybe they should find alternative camp sites.
Barney is a well run site, the facilities are second to none and we were not disappointed.
We will definately be back soon and thank the Managers again for a brilliant weekend.

Not a happy camper reviewed Barnard Castle Club Campsite...
From start to finish this was a disappointment. Upon arrival we were presented with the rules and regulations of the site which reflected more of a concentration camp than a caravan/camping site.
Total silence is expected to be maintained from 11pm onwards and heaven forbid if you do not want to go to sleep instantly. As a group of young (late 20's), experienced campers, we were made to feel like children from staff and management alike.
All in all, a disgusting experience making a mockery of campers and camping.

WOW ! This site was recommended to us and we weren't disappointed. Honestly cannot think of anything negative to say. The welcome was great and the toilets, washing up facilties and laudrey were spotless and in perfect working order at all times of the day. Individual washing cubicles provide privacy with extra touches such as additional lighting above the mirrors/wash basins and in the shower cubicles. Also washing lines very useful and thoughtful. A small playground and plenty of space to ride bikes kept our children entertained all weekend, leaving the adults time to relax! We will be back very soon. Thank you

We have never left a review on any site previously visited but felt we must on this occasion. What can we say? Fantastic site, fantastic managers/wardens on site and such a peaceful place to stay. Even though we had made an error in booking the pitch (booked a non electric when we thought it was with electric) nothing was too much trouble for Angie & Paul who accommodated us on a 'pitch' with electric hook-up. The toilet block and facilities are spotless as is the site. The fish and chip van on the Saturday was a treat too! Barnard Castle close by and well worth a visit so too is High Force Waterfall near Middleton-in-Teesdale. We enjoyed our stay so much we have booked a further stay next month, the correct pitch this time of course!

We were staying here as part of the W2W cycle route. The couple running the site could not have been more helpful. They even stored our dairy as we stayed when it was really hot. The facitlites were spotless. We even had the entertainment of the sheep being rounded up one morning. We left some washing out when out trying to find a bike tyre and it was taken in when it started raining. I loved my camping experience here. We had a lovely welcome and Angie and Paul were very helpful throughout our stay. The campsite was immaculate, the facilities spotless and the playground great for the children. An excellent site with wardens Angie & Paul going the 'extra mile' in trying conditions with the high winds and apparently without support, hopefully temporary for their sake. Once sited we felt really relaxed, pitches were spacious and level. Facilities were immaculate. Easy walk to town from the site, and plenty of pubs/cafes there. The little 'library shelf' was a boon as I had finished the book I bought. A trip to High and Low Force Waterfalls is a must, we were lucky to see after rain in full flow! Barney is one of our favourite sites, near the lovely little market town of Barnard Castle. We've been there several times and are going again at the end of this month. The area is beautiful, with lots to do in the area and Co Durham as a whole - physical activities, sight seeing, Roman remains, railway heritage. The site is not too big, and the toilet block is immaculate, but can be hard pressed at peak times, like so many sites. Reception sells basic supplies, but there is a supermarket in Barney itself.

This was only my second trip out and my first at a formal campsite. Oh wow hasn't 'Barney' set the standard high!
The site is immaculately clean, the toilets/showers/laundry/dishwashing/chemical disposal/reception areas were spotless and of a really high standard.
Nice level site, well laid out with good sized pitches. Water and rubbish points were well lit and clean and tidy. Nice dog walk around the perimeter of the site. Didn't get further afield due the heavy rain but know the area fairly well anyway and there are some lovely places to visit nearby. The wardens were really friendly and helpful. I notice some other reviewers have marked down on the facilities, but it suited me down to the ground as a solo camper who just wanted to get away from the daily grind. Fish and chip van calls on a Saturday night too.
The dawn chorus was stunning, and the crows kept chattering all day, trying to outdo the sheep! Will definitely return.

A lovely site for our first trip; green and attractive. We
asked for a quiet pitch and were given one at the far end of the site. Still in easy reach of the showers etc.
Good dog walk and a pleasant woodland walk into Barnard Castle taking about 30 mins. Couldn't have used this easily at night though.
Only drawback was no hostelry in walking distance.
Would return to try more of the walking in the area.

Visited the site on 1st April 2011,staff at reception were so friendly. Was led to our pitch by the nice guy on the push bike.Pitch was excellent, and again visited by 2nd member of staff who was concerned about the gale force winds and made sure we were happy with pitch. All we can say is my wife and i found these facilities to be the best we have visited and we are going back 1 week later, for another brill weekend.Really recommend this site to be one of the best.

we've been all over the country and Barney is one of the best sites around, can't fault the staff, brilliant atmosphere, great for everyone to enjoy, facilities are superb, site easy to get to, only down fall is Barney's shops shut on bank holiday week-ends, fish & chips worth waiting for on site Wednesday night, its got to be the most well maintained site ever, we have booked to go back for 10 days soon.

Being first time campers, what a joy to have found this 5 star camp site an introduction never to be forgotten, warm friendly staff nothing was too much trouble.
Town is brilliant for sightseeing, shopping, or just relaxing. Having been introduced to a fantastic Chinese Delivery Service, there was no need to cook. Returned to this site on more than 3 occasions and was greeted with familiarity and warmth.
Facilities are a big WOW, can't wait for nice weather in 2011 to return. Can definitely recommend to old and new campers.

Good location for walking and cycling. Bowes museum and the castle worth a visit.
Spotless facilities.
Childrens play area is in the middle of the site and can be very noisy. This did spoil my stay. Constant use of the lawn mower to direct arrivals and cut grass at the same time, became quite annoying.
Useful information leaflet provided, but the 'rules' are written in a fairly condecening way.
Town of Barnard Castle,in a pleasant walk away with a large supermarket, shops and pubs although the town does seem to be suffering from the effects of the recession.

Lovely site friendly and clean!! Not easy walking distance (with young ones) to pubs etc. But if you are just planning to stay onsite couldn't fault it!
It is quite windy as seams to sit on a slight hill but a nice site none the less!
