Although we are experienced campers, we are new CCC members. We were very impressed by the helpfulness of the site wardens and the immaculate condition of the site. Very good standard of facilities for a relatively small site. We have just upgraded to a small campervan and appreciated the assistance in setting up.
Sheriff Hutton is an attractive village with pleasant walk around the ruined castle. We visited York by local bus and went to the Ryedale Folk Museum in Hutton le Hole. There is lots to see and do in the area and it's a good base for English Heritage and National Trust properties. We ate out at the Highwayman in Sheriff Hutton and used the fish and chip van which visits the site 4 times a week. The only downside is that it's a long walk into the village along a surprsingly busy country road with no pavement for much of the way.

Just returned from a thoroughly enjoyable weekend break at Sheriff Hutton.
Arrived a little later than anticipated, but this was not a problem. Quickly checked in by Barbara and shown to our pitch by Dave (on his bike).
As our hook-up cable was too short, Dave lent us his spare so that we could at least get settled. Unfortunately the van battery was flat so it was tea by torch light!! Next morning Dave lent us his battery charger.
Shower block is spotlessly clean and the whole site is really well cared for.
Our kids enjoyed the play area, which is central to the site. They also liked visiting the shop to spend their pocket money and chat to Barbara.
Enjoyed it so much that we have already booked again for October half term (hard standing as suggested by Dave).
Many thanks Dave and Barbara and see you next month.

An excellent site which is well run and managed by the friendly and helpful wardens Dave and Barbara. I cant say I noticed any more noise than you would expect from the birds. It is the countryside after all.The faciliies on site although a bit dated were perfectly adequate. Handy for York Park and Ride, Castle Howard and other local attractions. Although we generally prefer Certificated Sites with minimum facilities this is a site we intend to visit again.

We really enjoyed our camping holiday, I think this has been the best site that I have stayed at, It was really peaceful and friendly. I would highly recommend it. If we camp in Yorkshire again we will definatly book this site. It is well located for easy driving to the park and ride into York or getting to the coast. The staff were excellent from the first contact when we booked our holiday to the day we left 6 days later, their hospitality seemed effortless. Thank you.

A lovely site which the wardens are working hard to improve. We were told significant improvements due to be made over the winter. Very helpful and arranged for us to be next to friends who had booked seperately. Well maintained grass and gardens. Toilet/showers were very clean but in need of upgrading. No real queues even though site quite busy. Some road noise and plenty of countryside noises. It is in the countryside after all!! We sampled the excellent chips from the van and also had a very good meal in the local pub in Sheriff Hutton. Site is well placed for visiting attractions such as Eden Camp, York, Scarborough etc. Not a large play area but in good order. Dog walking was limited and road is quite busy. Overall a very nice site which we would be very happy to return to,

We had a lovely welcome and found staff to be very helpful. The booking in was quick and was given a choice of pitches. The site was very well presented, the facilities were clean albeit the toilet/shower blocks were dated (could do with an upgrade to include a couple more showers)but it certainly wouldn't put us of using again. The wildlife/sheep could be a bit noisy but again thats what you expect when camping. The park and ride system to York was very good and there was lots to see and do especially the Eden Camp war musuem(fantastic value. We had a great time but blessed with good weather did help! We would certainly recommend Sheriff Hutton for a family site. Thank You

A pleasant site which seemed to be enjoyed by visitors of all ages. The site facilities were always clean and the site itself was very well maintained and the floral areas were much appreciated. I would like thank Glinys for her patience in arranging our multiple booking, two/three tents and a caravan on adjacent pitches and terry for his assistance on arrival and throughout our eleven night stay. A word of warning, stay away from the wood pidgeons who occasionally seem to fall off their perch whilst asleep.

Very well kept site. At the moment this site is not really suitable for dogs as there are no dog walks or public footpaths around. According to the very helpful and friendly Assistant Manager this is being looked at and hopefully will be sorted out. Very nice cycle ride into York (20 mile round trip).
The birds didn't bother us at all - it's the countryside after all!! Will be visiting again.

Now for the Warden what an ignorant unfriendly individual he is. A classic jobsworth who offends as soon as he looks at you never minds if he has reason to talk to you.
If the club ever wants to close a site down put this guy in charge of it !!! I bet his return rate is diabolical. Shame really lovely site spoilt by a totally disagreeable horrible little man. !!!

Returned today and already want to be back! Such lovely people, really friendly and extremely helpful to us setting up in the wind!
Very clean site and very well maintained. small park area for Kids however ours felt too old...they are in their teens though!
close enough to York, Scarbourough etc, but in the country enough to be peacefull, qiuet and secluded. the only noise we heard was from the ravens and the sheep, neither bothered us from sleeping!
We would definately return, and recommend to fellow campers, small but friendly site.
Many thanks!

This was the second stop on our tour this year and what a find! From the moment we turned up the helpfulness and friendlyness of the site assistants was top notch. Nothing was too much trouble even when the jockey wheel broke the soon came back with the number of the nearest dealer to get it fixed. This site is quiet and safe for children, while close enough to explore the Yorkshire area with easy day trips out. Take away van comes to site and a local pizza outfit delivers (Indian too). This is for us the Camping and caravaning site that really does make young children welcome which has not always been the case. We will be back.

Clean campsite, toilet block could do with been upgraded but was spotless. You need a car in order to enjoy the full benefits of the local area, the nearest shop was 1.5 miles away. dog walk was a disappointment only place i could exercise my dog was on a lead around the campsite and on a bit of grass outside the campsite, but this was worrying as the road was 60mph with some people doing in excess of this speed. no proper dog walk, just a little cordened off area where they may be able to clean themselves. would recommend this campsite for older couples who really do want to get away from it all. highlights included the fish and chip van calling at the site on alternate days. theres a takeaway place that does nice pizzas and you can get them delivered to the campsite for free if you do not want to cook, they also sell booze at reasonable prices. some nice walks around sheriff hutton itself.

A friendly well run site, with the impeccably clean facilities you expect from the Club. Handy for York and so many places to visit in the area. Yes, the rooks were a bit noisy at daybreak, but that's hardly the Club's fault. We're looking forward to going back next year.

I came as a group of eight people 5 in my family and 3 in the other family ... the site was very peaceful and well kept. The staff where friendly and welcoming, they were helpful and very warmly wished us off. The facilities were good in the respect that they were kept clean and there was a chip van that came in four nights a week. There was also an option of having pizza delivered to the site from up the road which we thought was a lovely idea. The only two imporvments we would have asked for would have been maybe another shower/toilet block, and a better dog walk area. My family had a large dog who is well behaved but needed some way to strech his legs, we also came with a jack russel who is naturaly very bouncy and it took alot of effort to wear her out just walking up the road and back. It would have been nice to have been able to walk the dogs round the site. Other than that it was a great site and in all honesty i think it was nice to wake up and hear the birds. Well done and thankyou x

hi just stayed with friends and family for weekend. nice clean and tidy site however, not suitable for children at all or people who want to sit talk n laugh! there is a note in their booklet saying 11pm quieten down so to speak we were just sat down talking n laughing between ourselves and on the 1st night got told to be quiet at 10pm. on the 2nd night we were sat round a table in front of our own tents there were 3 and the 3 caravans at the side of us were also sat outside their vans talking by 10.30 half of us were in bed the other half outside still they were told to go to bed now if half of the party could sleep inside the tents surely there was not much noise at all but the lady was very rude n quite sturn as well. this site is for older people who want to sit inside their vans watch tv and go to bed at 9pm. THE BIRDS!!!!!! stacks of crows over the field at the side of site make a right racket and at about 4am you get the pigeons cooing 1 starts and then stops and another starts so not much sleep. definately will not return

We have had a lovely stay at the site, and would go back again. It is very child friendly and safe. The staff were so welcoming and extremely helpful, not in the least put out by us continually blowing the electrics! The planned upgrade of the electrics would be great though as 10amp is not all that high. Very close to shops and York centre, a super base for exploring from and relaxing in. Thankyou for making us so welcome, we will be back!!

As found on several C&CC club sites the approach roads were suitable for tractors only with large craters as was the site ring road at the bottom end near pitch 16 area. Whilst the site Managers strive to keep the site nice and tidy these roads drag down the whole appearance of the site. Toilets and showers although spotlessly clean look somewhat jaded in this day and age.
A nice site in general but I hate being told which pitch I will be on !! Surely the club should allow us to pick our own pitch and report back as do lots of other sites both commercial and CC.
There was an issue of a single tent (complete with young children) being sited amongst caravans whose occupants were mainly senior citizens - didn't go down too well as there was acres of space amongst the tent area. Wouldn't go back in a hurry.

We have stayed on this site before so knew what we were getting, different staff but the excellent welcome was just the same, we stayed over the bank holiday week-end, leaving on the Sunday. The part of the site where most of the tents were pitched was full to capacity, mostly I should think with families and that is where this site falls down, Three showers are not enough, as I usually have my shower on an evening I was not affected but going over to use the toilet there were at least ten ladies waiting to use the shower, some of them had children so their wait must have been long, I saw one or two men taking their sons and coming back immediately so it must have been the same in the gents side.
Apart from that the site is well placed for all the attractions locally, York being the most visited I expect, The North Yorks railway is only half an hours drive away also Eden camp, the Maze and Elvington aircraft museum are only a short distance away. Also there are two out of town shopping centres not too faraway.
The local pub does lovely meals both at lunch and in the evening and the post office in Sheriff Hutton sells a variety of foodstuffs including locally produced pies and sausages and fresh bread daily as well as the usual newspapers magazines etc.,

Very friendly on arrival and during in our stay, often riding by and chatting. 3 Showers not a problem we didnt have to wait. I wouldnt go back only because of the birds.. I've never heard anything like it, it was like the film "BIRDS". If you can sleep with ear plugs I would recommend taking them. It's a shame as it's a lovely site.

Friendly welcoming staff, the site was well kept and great for exploring the coast, York, or the Dales.
The main problem was the shower block. Whilst clean it was in desperate need of a makeover and the water pressure was feeble. There was also no suitable shower to wash small children. The play park was also in poor repair and too small for such a large site.

We found a warm reception when we arrived and after being booked in were taken to our pitch and had discussion on which way we would pitch. The assistant manager who had shown us to our pitch came back later to check that everything was ok for us.
The shower block was a bit of a walk from where we were pitched but didn't cause us any problems, the facilities were lovely and clean. The only comment we would make is that for the size of the site 3 showers in each of the mens & ladies facilities doesn't seem many in busy periods, again this didnt affect us and we never had to wait for a shower to be available.
The site is nice & flat and surrounded by a hedge, the only thing that would put us off going back was the very noisy crows & pigeons!
It's a very nice quiet site (apart from the crows & pigeons) and is ideally situated to get to a lot of different places and very handy for the park & ride if you want to go into York.

I picked this site at last minute for the Easter bank holiday and it was my first time in a Camping & Caravanning Club site. Fortunately, it was a great experience....
On arrival everything was explained by Barbara and then Dave escorted us to our pitch and explained a few more details. As I am used to years over camping in a small tent in sites where you just find a space it was really great to have a designated pitch and have someone so helpful.
The site itself was flat and although bust site we did not feel it was anything but peaceful.
The facilities were spotless and cleaned everyday between 1030am - 12 noon. Only issue is that one shower (out of three) in the ladies does not work adequately when the other two in operation - but this is signed. I never had any problem with waiting more than two minutes for a shower but for the site size I thought three showers was insufficient.
There is a mini play area - but this is one small slide and swings.
There is a little on site shop but not useful for me. Locally you have a well stocked Tesco Express in Strensall (2-3 miles away). There is also a great park for kids to play on.
In terms of location: Hovingham (prettiest village in Yorkshire) is right out of site, Castle Howard nearby and the Moors. We took the opportunity to visit Hovingham, Sewerby Hall (north of Bridlington) and York itself. Great deal on visiting Castle Museum in 2011 - kids go free and you can revisit without paying again for the next 12 months!
Will definitely visit this site again - with kids again and without - it's suitable for all!

This site is far below club standards! The roadway around the site is in appalling state of repair. When it rained it flooded badly. The grounds could have done with a cut during our 4 days there. The grass was dry when we arrived.
The shower block is in dire need of restoration, it looks untidy and the upper levels full of spider webs. The water pressure in the showers was pathetic. One of the benches in the showers had rotting wood and a loose baton with a rusting screw exposed.
From a location point of view it is well positioned and access to York (using the excellent PNR) was superb. Likewise access to the Dales was easy.
In the current state of this site I'd advise anyone thinking of using this site to take this review into consideration.

The first time we went we were a bit apprehensive as we tend to stick to the sites we know. We had a warm welcome on arrival and the site was just what we wanted as we had brought our 2 small grandchildren. They could play on the kiddies play area and we could watch them from our caravan. We thought it was a safe site for small children and they were soon making friends.
So much so we are about to book again.

A small enough site that the children could go to the play area by themselves and still be seen. We enjoyed visiting Beningbrough Hall (National Trust - lots for children to do, great playground) and Dalby Forest (Forestry Commission - lots of walks and mountain biking).
