Having read previous reviews, we were minded to cancel. However, we are pleased we did not. The welcome was one of the most friendly we have had at a C&CC site, and if always having time for a pleasant chat when we passed them is a "staff attitude problem", then long may they keep it up. Although obviously not new, the site roads were fine, "pot-holes" is a bit extreme, and nothing that would concern anyone - especially if you stick to the site speed limit!
The condition of the toilet blocks seemed to be standard C&CC, very clean and well maintained. We had no problems with availability on this first good weather weekend of the season. Having said that, the provision seemed insufficient for a site of this size in busy periods.
In summary, this is a relaxed and attractive site. An easy walk to interesting Hertford with its town square and River Lea towpath walk. There is a park next door for dog-walks. We would recommend this site, and will definitely be back.

Stayed on this site for the London marathon weekend. Very well laid out and not busy.
We were given a nice welcome when we arrived and given a choice of where to pitch.
As stated before, only one shower block was open but this was central to the site and always clean and warm. I never had to wait for a shower.
The site also has laundry facilities, inside dish washing area and an outdoor play area. (Quite small) trains to London from nearby hertford station or who and at under £20 a night for four of us a very cheap break.

I stayed on this site for 5 nights and was very disappointed. This should be a flagship site for the club but unfortunately as previous posters have stated there are problems on the site. I was surprised at the amount of units that appeared to be occupied by full time residents.(apart from the fact they leave for 1 night a month) Whilst I was there a caravan was stolen from site, this hardly made me feel safe and secure. The site manager really has an attitude problem - the way he spoke to me was terrible. The site roads need work on them potholes everywhere. The club seriously need to look at this site.

Investment Urgently Needed!
I regularly stay at Hertford, and things are going downhill, I believe due to a lack of investment by the Club.
It could be such a great site, and is very well located.
The staff do a good job and the Wardens are a great bunch - but they can only do what they can do!
There are 2 facilities blocks on site - each has only 1 washing machine/dryer, and only 3 shower cubicles. Since September, only one has been open and that is the case now until Easter. There are around 60 units on site now (lots more in the Summer), and being an all year site it stays pretty busy. Staff levels are reduced by half now, meaning they only have the resources to look after one block. This is insufficient for the number of people here! Even with both blocks open in the Summer, that makes 6 showers and 2 washing machines for upwards of 500 visitors - you do the math!
The roads within the site are dismall, a third world country has better roads with less potholes. In the current wet conditions - it just makes it worse as you cant even avoid the holes as the roads are like rivers. Many of the pitches are lower than the grass, and most of them are soaked with an inch or more of water covering the shingle.
This is NOT the Site staffs fault - so come on CCC - put some investment in this site, sort out the roads and pitches, and at least ensure there are enough staff to have both blocks open 365, and seriously consider increasing these facilities!

reading past reveiws and judging by my own experiences, there are clearly some recent staff issues at this otherwise lovely site we have been visiting for several years - 5 times this year alone; greetings and one-to -one comments I have had range from Godlike to Hitlerism.
Quite erratic. The Club have acknowledged they are formally investigating written complaints.

Perhaps we were unlucky, but we were kept waiting all of 10 minutes before anyone came to direct us to a pitch (no other units being dealt with!) - no apology offered! However, we valued site's proximity to rail station for our trips to the Olympic events we attended.

Any concerns about a big site on a Bank Holiday weekend were dispelled when we were shown the tent field and invited to pitch wherever we liked (subject of course to the 6m rule), so while the main site was pretty busy, we relaxed in a sheltered green field without a motorhome in sight!
Very friendly staff kept the facilities up to standard as best they could with so many people constantly using them. Amazingly we never had to queue for a shower! J-Cloths to give a quick wipe round the basins would have been helpful, as found at Cheddar Mendip Heights a few weeks ago.
Hertford is a delightful and historic little town with easy access on foot from the site - take the footpath left before the main road, turn right at the bottom, and continue through the churchyard. A pedestrian subway then takes you into the old heart of the town. Lovely countryside within easy reach too.
We may prefer smaller sites, but we wouldn't hesitate to return to Hertford.

We have stayed here a few times now and are so pleased to see the improvements and effort being put in by the wardens to make the facilities better. A while back the washing up room and showers were dire but are clean and tidy now. Yes, money needs to be spent on it but until that happens keep up the good work Hertford wardens! Very friendly and helpful to us.

Nicely situated for Hertford and trains to London. Staff all friendly and helpful. The shower blocks are superb, no push button just running hot water, a shame users constantly left them running with lights also left on. They were very clean until abused by users. Used this site as a visit with my daughter as she lives only 20 miles from it. It was rather large for our tastes but that is personal choice not criticism. May use it neare Christmas as a base for London.

I have stayed a few times since May, I have always found Jill & Brian, Fran & Den, and the rest of the staff very friendly and helpful! the comment about the OS maps, they are behind the door in the shop, same price at W H Smiths! (so buy from site)
The showers have now been done so no chipped bases any more, always very clean! even when the weather has been bad. If you are a dog owner there are lots of walks around Hertford and surrounding area, both the managers and assistants have dogs so very welcome (if kept on leads) Thank you for making it a great stay. Well laid out site with good amenity blocks, but nothing else really. Poor kids play area. The most disappointing was the attitude of the wardens / site staff. We asked for advice on local directions to a cycle track and were met with humourless disinterest and total lack local knowledge. No real information centre available, just a load of leaflets from external sources. No local os map on display. Very poor site shop and no papers ordered. The least customer focused c and c club site I've ever known. We found the Cole Green cycle track ourselves, access is about 1.5 miles from site and it was superb!

Lovely site, stayed here for three months
last year, just had another twelve days. Wardens friendly and helpful. The only down side is the shower block, although very clean and warm it does need updating and my husband says it needs more showers. The site itself is beautiful with large pitches and plenty of open spaces. You can sit outside your van and watch the wildlife.

We have used the site for a number of years and are delighted with the friendly, supportive attitude of the staff. We must mention by name Brian, Jill, Fran and Den. Nothing is too much trouble for them, whatever the problem and whatever the weather. They run a friendly site, which has, as a result, developed a superb community spirit. We have used the site as a base for visiting family and for writing walks, which we post on the Internet on the site www.walkingworld.com and there are an incredible number of delightful walks within easy reach, including from the site itself. The town centre is only one mile away, but the site is rural and has a variety of birds and other wildlife.Very highly recommended!

Two of us spent five nights in a tent with an electrical hook-up towards the end of February 2012. Fran and Den were standing in for the managers during our stay - and they did a thoroughly excellent job.
The staff were friendly and helpful at all times. We were pitched fairly close to the facilities block which provided everything we needed. The whole site was very clean and well maintained.
We would definitely recommend this site and would be happy to go back there in the future.

We have returned here for the third time but noticed that despite the facilities being kept clean, the state of the shower trays and cubicles was very poor. The shower trays are all chipped and look horrible and the cubicle I used has a crack from top to bottom on the rear wall. Not the standard we have seen so far on club sites.
The site itself is lovely, peaceful without much road noise and just a little noise from the planes into/out of Luton. A lovely walk through Balls Park.
It is a downhill walk to the town centre (about 15 minutes)and some lovely walks along the river towards Ware.
Staff were friendly, despite us interrupting their evening meal, sorry about that :-) We will certainly be back but would like to hear that the facilities will be updated some time in the near future.

We spent 3 nights at the Hertford site. The staff were helpful and very pleasant.Would reccomend to all for a weekend or longer. The signs on approach to the lane suggest you should cross the dual carriage way. This was a bit hairy. It might be better to got to the next round about and come back on the other side. We will be back at a later date.

We have visited this site many times over the past few years and we love it. The site managers are very friendly and the facilities are spotless. There are times when the site is noisy and the facilities are untidy and crowded (as has been mentioned in other reviews) but what people need to remember is that it is a large site and during the high season and school holidays the site will see a rise in families and groups and at these times the facilities will get stretched. The site managers will always respond to problems that arise but telling them the next day, after the event, is pointless as they cannot resolve problems/issues when they are over...logical, I think!! If you want a quiet, children-free holiday it would be wise to visit the site outside the high season/school holidays - which if I was retired, I would certainly do!! Roll-on retirement age!!! and keep up the good work Hertford site!!

Living in Central London this is a great site to visit if you want a countyside experience without the long journey. The site is easily accessible from the A10 and despite the closeness to Hertford and being near a school it is one of the most peaceful campsites i've been too. The staff are really friendly, (they even mowed the grass for me on my last trip), the facilities spotless (although one of the toilet blocks was closed last time and it wasn't clear if this was permanent thing) and the site clean and tidy. There are plenty of quiet spots on site if you want to relax and unless you pitch near the childrens play area you hardly notice the children playing. I've been to this site with the family and just me and the dog and haven't had a bad experience yet - all it needs is for someone to build a pub next door and it would be perfect!!

We had a lovely week in May. The pitch was in Moonackers Alley and was lovely and peaceful. The dog walk area was excellent. The facilities were great. However this wasn't the most friendly of sites and the information provided about the local area was extremely limited. we paid for a wifi card so we could do our own surfing to check information. The C&CC handbook gave more information about local attractions than was displayed at site. We did have a lovely day trip to London by train from Hertford. The directions could do with updating as the fire station highlighted at the roundabout is completely obscured by a large building and not identifiable at all until you've been round the roundabout for a week! However, these matters aside, this is a lovely site and we shall certainly return.

Hertford is a lovely site that we have visited many times. Over the last three years however we have seen a change and not necessarily for the better. The Facilities as always are very clean, The Site managers very friendly. The downside for us is the lack of respect from the larger families and groups that now seem to use the site. With the demise of the bins around the water tap areas, we are now seeing rubbish just dumped anywhere. The lake area is somewhat overgrown now, but not enough to prevent loud and noisy people throwing their beer tins and rubbish into the water. Sunday night we had more excessive noise from parents and children. On the Monday as we were packing up to leave, the ladies dutifully deposited our rubbish in the recycling point at the entrance to the site, commented to the site managers, and were told that they (the site managers) did not get down the far end very often? Come on club!! This was somewhat apparent, as we never saw the site manager's, and there were dogs running loose, and ball games a plenty, along with lots of noise. Just a tightening up of the rules, and putting back the rubbish collection points would remedy these shortcomings. It's a good site just spoilt by an inconsiderate few.

I have visited this site a number of times throughout 2009/2010 (mostly out of out of school holiday times). Big spacious site with generous pitches. This is a nice site but our stay was ruined by families who played around their tents instead of the designated area. Despite being advised by staff about the rules our peace and quiet was non existant as we were continually bombarded by frisbees, footballs and children on bikes. I would beg the site to consider a child free area as there are people who will always break the rules! we ended up leaving a day earlier than we paid for and would not consider visiting or recommending this site until there are areas just for adults.
