You’ve seen the signs, right? Secret Nuclear Bunker right this way...

Now decommissioned, Kelvendon Hatch was built as a hardened ops centre for RAF fighter command and later turned into an emergency regional government defence site. Now you can explore a facility that was designed for up to 600 military and civilian personnel, possibly even the Prime Minister, to organise survival of the population in the event of nuclear war.

Visitors start at an unassuming bungalow, underneath which is a 120m long tunnel which leads into the main bunker. Containing a host of communication equipment including a fully operational BBC Studio, an air filtering plant, a small surgery, washrooms, dormitories, and a large canteen, you can explore the whole area with a self-guided tour (adult and child tours are available which both follow the same route.) There are several films to watch en route and a dressing up area where you can try on authentic military uniforms and gas masks!

There is a canteen on site serving light refreshments every day, including soup. Most weekends the canteen will serve hot meals. Unfortunately the secret nuclear bunker is unable to take credit/debit cards.
