Originally designed as part of a chain of coastal artillery Walmer Caslte evolved into the official residence of the Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports. The Duke of Wellington held that post and spent a great deal of time at the castle. Visitors can see the armchair in which Wellington died and an original pair of 'Wellington boots.' In recent years Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother made regular visits to the castle and the rooms she used are also on display. Out of doors visitors can enjoy the magnificent gardens, a woodland walk and some excellent bird spotting. Why not cycle the path along the beach front to nearby Deal Castle. http://www.english-heritage.org.uk/daysout/properties/deal-castle/
