National Trust for Scotland: Rockcliffe
This beautiful stretch of coastline on Rough Firth, 7 miles south of Dalbeattie, is a wonderful place for a day out. Contained within a National Scenic Area, it has miles of unspoilt landscape to explore including meadows, woodland, mudflats, sandy beach, rocky shore and marshland. The diverse mix of habitats attracts a huge variety of wildlife, including butterflies and reptiles. There is a bird sanctuary on nearby Rough Island to which you can walk out at low tide. Another walk from Rockcliffe takes you to the Mote of Mark, a late 6th- to 7th-century Dark Age trading post that offers stunning views over the Dumfries and Galloway countryside and across the Solway Firth, sometimes even to the Lake District.
