Festivals & Heritage

Explore the intriguing ruins of one of the largest Romano-British villas in the country. Life in this grand Roman villa must have been luxurious when you consider that they had bathhouses, latrines and even underfloor heating. See the beautiful mosaics, some only recently excavated. You can even spot the Roman Snails, or Helix Pomatia, that were brought to Britain around 46BC. They were considered a great delicacy when fattened on milk and peacock’s brains, and servered at the villa's banquets.

And you can get an insight into the process of archaeology, when you walk in the footsteps of the Victorian gamekeeper who unearthed the first evidence of the villa.
